African American Sleevers

  • Popular Post

Hi All!

I wanted to start a thread for African-American sleevers (no worries I HEART all sleevers from the rainbow). I just thought, no scientific proof, that African-American sleevers may respond to the surgery different than our lovely non-African American sleeved sisters and brothers. I wanted to know if we had the same skin issue, hair problems, and other surgery related issues. Also, how to deal with the culture shock. African-American "soul food" may be something of the past... or not. So I was just looking for a space to voice culture related issues and concens.

PS- I TRULY  ALL SLEEVERS.

I wish I could put a before but this my new phone I took this pic today

Ebonisekim, I have been following you since I was sleeved and got on this site in September. I am very impressed with your weight loss and your eating plan. I also no longer eat bread, pasta or rice.... Mostly I just eat protein. I do not count calories or track anything. I have went from a size 18/20 to a 14 in less than three months. Thanks for the great advice. You rock that sleeve.

Hello everyone it's been awhile almost 4 months since I've been on . Just wanted to shout out that I've lost 75lbs . I started at 240 n I'm 165 I feel great . I had surgery on January 8 2013 . I'm still losing but on my own pace I'm controlling it more . I think 10 more pounds is all I want to lose . This surgery gave me back so much many things that I missed doing . Good luck to everyone n God Bless????

Don't buy all of the stuff that's on the list . I did that n still have broth n sugar free ice pops in the freezer. U won't have an appetite at all. Just get your protein shake mix n get chocolate everything else is blah. You will want your water the most . Someone just told me omg u lost so much weight n I just starting laughing so hard. Girl it feels so good to wear skinny jeans n u will be doing the same in no time at all . I will pray for u my sleeve sister. Oh n don't keep pressing the pain button . It makes u so nauseous idk what the heck was making me feel like that the nurse told me . I felt better as soon as I stopped using it .

Thank you blessings2, I just purchased my protein shakes, some Gatorade, propel zero... I think I started actually realizing how fast my surgery is coming & I just got scared.... No turning back, I made my decision & I'm sticking with it. My mom gave me a pep talk in the car & I'm feeling a little better. I'm just going to pray that everything goes well with my surgery... I will keep you posted, I have surgery on the 17th.

U will be fine I was scared too but now I'm shopping where I want to shop. I'm tired of paying for extra material in the big girl store. Lol not saying no names but u get the picture . Even my bra size went down its amazing . I recently went to a family event n everyone was SHOCKED I planned it that way . It was some hating but with Love they felt ashamed . Now they are all dieting . Ok

Thanks for the encouragement blessings2. I definitely know what u mean about the overpriced big girl stores just for some cheap fabric... I mean I could understand if it was of a certain quality. But I digress but soon that will be a thing of the past for me once again... Don't know y I'm so scared, I know that God will watch over and protect me from any harm during my surgery. I think it's just fear and I have to push it out of my mind. Looking forward to a new year and new me!!! And like you, I have this family event next June & I cannot wait to show off my new body to all my haters!!! Love it!!!

I had surgery on 12-3-13 and am feeling 3 things...tired, weak, and HUNGRY. I know things will get better every day but I think I'm getting weaker. The other thing that concerns me is that I feel everything going down - drinking water, eating soup, sucking on a popsicle I just feel it and it is extremely uncomfortable. Assuming that is reflux but not sure as I've never had it. I'm also dreaming about food and all the things I wish I could eat. I'm really starting to see how strong my addiction really was!!!! Hoping I feel better soon!!!!!

Hi,

I'm an A A sleever in NY. I had my sleeve sep. 27,2013. Started wl journey at 260 lbs, was at 240 before my sleeve at last docs apptmnt was 202 lbs. I have had some set backs, I've been to er 3 times for dehydration. Hospitalized once for severity, will be having hiatus hernia repair in Jan. My surgeon thinks it's interfering with sleeve. I still don't get enuf liquids or protein, food down <sigh> ...still I have no regrets, I feel a little weak but better than I have in years. I just pulled my bullet back out and isopure vanilla. I maid a smoothie like the ones I used to make when I started clean eating, kale, spinach, blueberries, and strawberries, Hershey unsweetened dark cocoa, a little instant folgers, 8 oz soy milk all in bullet...32 grms.. of protein and went down ok. Bottom line is even with the little fight I enjoyed it, so repeat.....A few of my scars did keloid, I started with a flap of skin because of 2 c - sections and an ectopic. Let's not talk breast, I started in the itty bitty titty comittee so not really concerned. Oh I'm 47 yrs old, and I'm deemed disabled because of my commodities. So I don't really have hope for plastic surgery. :( Idc I will be healthier, and hopefully live longer. So I say All this to say I'm thankful for the journey, as for the unpleasantness this too shall pass.....so hallelujah any how!!!

Congratulations on taking your first step...YES it will get better. I think what your feeling is from swelling. As the swelling goes down, that feeling of awareness of everything going down should subside...also two good booms to read to deal with your head hunger that had u thinking about food (because at this time out from surgery you are not physically hungry, but mentally hungry) Emotional First Aid Kit and Exodus from Obesity...both books are very good books to help u develop skills to assist with the mental transition required after WLS. Good luck, keep us posted :-)

Thanks AreNude - I appreciate your response. I actually woke up today feeling better so I can see brighter days ahead. I'm looking forward to my new healthy life!!!!
