It used to be that I'd be sweating all the time, even when it's cold outside, so in one sense it's nice not to be doing that anymore. But I've noticed recently that I'm always cold - I've taken to wearing long pants, a sweatshirt, socks, and gloves, all while staying undercovers, and that only make me moderately comfortable. My mom felt my hands yesterday, and of course now she's convinced that I'm going to die of malnutrition any moment now haha. laugh.gif

Anyone else experience this post-surgery? This is my first winter since I had the VSG on July 21.

-Ryan

As it was explained to me, we are losing body fat that use to keep us warm. Which in the summer time, it was so hard on us. We will tend be colder. I had to have 2 weeks of blood thinners so it has definately affected me, I sleep in flannel jammies, socks and an extra blanket on my side of the bed and I live in Alabama. This has nothing to do with malnutrion. I dont know if after a while it you may acclimate yourself but to me it may make my summers a little more bearable. I even have a small space heater under my desk duing the day and I when I walk outside even in the 50's, I still wear gloves.

Oh I know, I just found it amusing how paranoid and micromangagerial my mother is about my health these days.

I also can not get warm. Originally from Maryland and now in Florida for the past 11 years – pre-surgery,I laughed at others wearing jackets when it was 40 out. Now I have a pull over@ work that I put on most days and sleep with sweat pants and top.

I also get a chill when I eat too much… you know thefeeling.

But after 75 lbs gone – I can take being cold…

I've seen this from others. I know that as we lose fat we are getting colder and our bodies are generally out of wack, but there are others who are thin and not cold-so what is really up with this? Does it ever go away? I'd take a weight loss in exchange for being cold, course then you are wearing bulky clothes.. I haven't had WLS surgery yet.

I to used to over heat just going from the house to the car "50 steps or so" The new colder me is a nice exchange for the old overweight me.. I may not have lost but 37lbs up to this point, but it's been enough to cool me down.. I live in southest Texas so the winters here are not to nice to people that over heat easily. Take the change and just deal with the cold.. Spring/Summer time will be here before you know it, and you will be greatful you aren't as hot and sweaty as you were pre-surgery..

They do say every 14lbs you lose it like taking an overcoat off......well this winter I am freezing, even in Spain!

My hands are suffering the most tho...we have electric blankets on our bed, and most days I wear several layers including thermals...but my hands are the last to get warm!!

I was always the girl who was hot. Last winter I kept on saying please turn down the heat it is to hot and stuffy in here. Boy am I singing a different tune this winter . I am 5 weeks post op and have never worn so many cloths in my life. I told everyone not to get me cloths for X mas but I was really excited to get hats and gloves because I did not own any of them. All I can say on this subject is thank god for Hoodies they are my saving grace. I am hoping that as i get to goal weight this will level out and I will peal off the layers and find my new thin body under all these layers.

I posted this in another thread. I really think there is more to it than just weight loss.

I have been noticing in several posts that people report feeling colder after this surgery. Some people attribute it to the weight loss, but others say they have lost large amounts of weight before and not had this effect. I decided to do some research. There are several articles that say increasing ghrelin increases body temperature. This article suggests that rats that don't produce ghrelin have trouble regulating body temperature in cold environments. They also have less nonREM sleep, (more dream time, less deep restful sleep), but they stay awake better during the day. I guess what is interesting to me is this hormone is a big player in sleep and thermo-regulation. I was wondering what others have personally noticed about their changes in sleep and ability to adjust to cold or hot temperatures.

Personally. I have noticed I sleep less, 6-7 hours at night. I feel awake but tire easily (which I think is more related to surgery recovery). I have definitely felt colder and always have a blanket over me.

I was always Hot before surgery ! it didnt matter if it was summer or winter I was wearing tank tops and sandals. But now 11 weeks post op I am always freezing! I sleep with 5 blankets including and electric blanket on high, I sleep with pants , t shirt , sock and sometimes a robe and my feet and hands are always cold no matter what. I will say the weight loss is great. I lost 86lbs from may 2010 to oct.2010 before surgery, and I am down 81lbs since surgery on Oct.27th 2010! making a total of 167lbs lost.... I am super excited to see more results and can definitely live with the always being cold instead of fat and unhealthy...

.

I am super cold too! In my workplace, I would be the one to call housekeeping to have the temperature adjusted to lower numbers because its just not good to work when its hot! When I came back to work 6 days after my surgery, man was I surprised...I was freezing!! I had to wear a sweater over my scrubs and people were complaining that it was humid and hot in the room...I was surprised...Amazed actually! So yeah, I too have a collection of hoodies for work use...Went to hollister's yesterday, whole store was 40 % OFF !!

No you certainly aren't alone in this. I'm significantly colder now than I was a few months ago. In fact I'm FREEZING all the time!!!:scared0: I guess that extra 50 Lbs I was carrying around was good for one thing..

Same here about being cold. I went to the movies today and of course took off my coat and scarf as soon as I sat down. Maybe 5 minutes into the movies I was freezing. I looked around to see if anyone else was cold. Nope as a matter of fact I saw several people with short sleeve shirts on, I tried to tough it out,but I finally had to put my coat, scarf, and gloves on and was still freezing.

I take being cold over being obese any day of the week tho!!!! :D

I am relieved its not in my head. People are wondering what's wrong with me that I'm walking around like my grandmother with three or four sweaters on complaining about how cold it is.

Thank you so much for posting this,

try to keep warm

Janine

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
