I've heard that some people received a card that you can give the waiter that will allow you to order smaller meals or off the kids menu. Where did you get this card....from your Dr or your NUT? I didn't get one and wanted to ask about getting one. Thanks.

I didnt receive a card either, but I do eat out. I just order off the kids menu. I have not had anyone say anything yet, I have also been to a buffett. Granted it was a waste of money. I just choose what I wanted off the line.

My NUT told me they used to issue these cards but no longer do (I forgot the reason why). When I eat out I just order whatever I want, eat what I can and then bring the rest home. I can usually eat 2-3 more meals off of it.

I asked my surgeon for one and he said while they used to give them out, they no longer do because they said that the food choices for the kids meals are usually not that healthy and they really don't want people to order the kids meals. He suggested ordering something healthy and taking a to go box and making a couple more meals out of it, which is what I normally do.

My sister had such a card issued to her after her gastric bypass, she found (as stated above) that the kids meal selection was pretty bad as far as good Protein rich selections and other smaller restaurants that served smaller child's portions were happy to sell it to her with or without a card. So all in all the card was of little use.

One idea I've heard is to order a smaller entrée and ask the wait staff to bring a to go box when the meal is served. Immediately cut the entrée in half and box it so it is out of sight and unavailable. If the meal is very large then cut in 1/3rds or 1/4s box all but one portion.

A couple I met that both have lap bands order ONE full size entrée and then cut it in half, box that half and then cut the remaining half in half and that's what we eat. That's how much excess we server here in the USA, 4 times as much as we need.

I don't want and have never heard of that card before. So far I love eating out on my sleeve, delicious leftovers! Even a small meal is lasting me 2-3 meals now. I'm saving so much money by just not being a pig anymore.

I see the NUT tomorrow for the first time after my surgery. I'm going to ask about that card :)

This is my take on the card, and it's not directed at anyone in particular, BUT think of this way:

The kid's meals are full of fried, fat loaded junk food with a toy, right? Not on plan. Not the best choices, and typically just not the best option for you.

appetizers are smaller portion, typically a bit healthier, and cheaper than an entree. Better option

Share your meal with a spouse, child, or box it up and bring it home. Best option

I can not fathom waving a little card to complete stranger pretty much announcing to the universe, "Hey I'm a fatty, had 85% of my stomach removed so I can't eat huge portions, now give me a discount".

For me, it's just ridiculous. Buffets are "All You Can Eat". All I can eat is about a cup of food, so I'll pay my $7.99 for my cup of food and enjoy the time with friends and family. They didn't charge me three times the buffet price when I could eat enough for 3 people.

I always figured if I needed to really save 2 stinking dollars, I should just stay home and cook for myself.

Businesses are there to make money, and I'm not going to try to score a discount because of my choice to have surgery.

I guess I don't feel bad about using the card because I am 58 yrs. old and at most places, you can order off the senior menu at age 60. I rarely use it though. I'd rather order a regular dinner or lunch and take home the left overs since I am not big on cooking and it gives me another one or two meals.

I got my card from my lap band surgeon. All it says is this person can not eat large meals so please consider letting him/her order from the senior menu. It is signed by him.

You can print the cards online. I have had a lot of people photo copy my card and laminate it.

I don't have the link for printing the card but I have seen links for it so I am sure you could do a search and find the link.

couldnt agree more. My surgeon gave me one of these cards last week at my 2 week check up and me and my boyfriend (once we got in the car) laughed about how silly it would be to show a waiter that card

My daughter got that card and only tried using it once. The waitress basically accused her of trying to be cheap. (the cave restaurant in Mo). The whole experience there was a nightmare, but that pretty much made up my mind that I would just order chicken breast and take home what I can eat or if I am out with someone close to me I will just eat some of their meal.

I share with my husband if it's a place where we know there is enough....I eat very little now - or I will order an appitizer (sp?) or just order a regular dinner and then take the majority of it home and it will last for a few meals. I am with whoever said 'no way am I announcing to a stranger I'm a former fatty'!!! :) A kids meal, according to my dietitian, is NOT a good choice!

I would have ripped the waitress a new one, called the manager over and let him rip her another new one. Then demonstrated how cheap *I* was by not leaving a tip.

Good reason to NEVER visit THAT restaurant again! I feel a little bad about not spending as much at our favorite restaurant so I leave a little more tip. I did tell the waitress what I had done and she was glad for me, they accommodate me and blend up anything I want.

Spend your money where you get decent service.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
