Hi Everyone,

I am almost five months post op, and have recently noticed that my hair is thinning and the texture is different. Anyone else experienced this? Any suggestions for supplements that I can take to help out? I haven't lost a lot in one place, like there are no bald Patches, it just feels thinner and ....well.....just different.

Thanks!!

I am only about 4 weeks post op, however Hair loss, thinning and changing is well know problem after significant weight loss. The body is confused and trying to figure out what is going on. Since hair is not needed to live, ( well in the body's mind) it puts hair on the back burner while it concentrates it's energy on surviving. The good news is once things level out, your hair will be back and normal.

Biotin, a supplement, is meant to help. You should check out 'massagegoddess - amelia' on youtube. I think she said that Rogaine helped her.

I am nearly 5 months and having the same problem, I can see my hair coming out in bunches especially when i wash it

, here is the link of the thread that I started recently

Hair is seriously shedding!!!

Hope it helps, I've started to take zinc (as per surgeon suggestion) and added at least 1/2 Protein drink again a day, and it seems to be getting better!

HI Guys,

I'm new to the forum, but I have friends that have had the surgery and they tell me hair thinning is major problem if you are not getting enough Protein. I add on of those 45gm/ 212 cal Protein Shots to my Water. It is sickening sweet that's why I Water it down. I'm hoping it prevents thin hair.

Oh I'm 3 months post op and 59lbs weight loss. I stopped doing cardio because my weight loss was too fast and my blood pressure was too low. I'm well hydrated but I had low BP before surgery so I guess it's just my body trying to adjust.

Dawn

Yep, mine is thinning too... I eat my Protein first, drink plenty of Water, take all my supplements and it is still falling out like crazy in the shower... oh, and I am a 'slow' -hahaha= nightmare! But if you read Chilo's thread and others on here, they all say that it will grow back! Lets hope it is sooner that later eh?! xx

My hair is falling too. It's on my clothes, couch, floor, shower etc.. I'm 4 mo. post op and stressed about Hair loss. I've always had very nice hair. I think what is stressing me the most is my aunt lost almost all her hair with Gastric Bypass. I've said on the forums many time that my aunt looks like a bag of bones near death now and my family always points that out to me. Even brings before and after pics of her to my house. No matter how many times I tell them our surgeries are not the same they don't let up. As soon as they notice my hair loss I will never hear the end of it. I take Biotin, but after months of reading hair loss post I truly belive nothing helps or stops the loss. Even people that did everything right still lost hair.

All I want for Christmas is my hair loss to stop.....my hair loss to stop...my hair loss to stop!!!

Not only does dieting cause weight loss, so does surgery. Anesthesia will cause Hair loss between 3-6 months following surgery. I don't know why...it's just what I was told. I hear the zinc orally will help, Nioxin Shampoo helps as well as Rogaine. The problem is that all of these take about 2 months to show any signs of new growth, so the sooner you start the better you are once you start your hairloss. The good news for the loss due to anesthesia is that your hair will grow back. However, I am not sure how the ongoing diet and weight loss will affect hair. I am just 2 wks out and have started everything to help lesson my hair loss when it happens. I hope this helps.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
