What is normal weight loss within first 2-3 weeks

Recommended Posts

Hi all. I have not been on here for some months. Personal issues that I will not go into here, but I had my sleeve on 11/29/10. So far I am very happy with the way I feel. I was taking Lasix to get rid of excess Fluid pre-surgery, but my dr. did not want me to continue it post surgery. I was alarmed at first, because, of course I started retaining fluid and actually put on 5 lbs, from surgery day through 5 days post op. He was right in his decision, because I would have been dehydrated had I taken it. With that said, after I lost that 5 lbs of fluid plus an additonal 10 lbs during week 2, there has been no further change in weight. On monday I will be 3 weeks post op. I have been getting in 64+ ounces of fluids, getting in all my required 60 grams of Protein, walking 1+mile on the treadmill for a week now with no further change. Am I doing something wrong, or is this normal?

I am just over 4 weeks post-op and I lost 15lbs the first week and then barely nothing for the next two weeks and finally the scale is moving again!

I have to ask, How are you getting in 64oz of Water and 60g of Protein? I still can't intake that much. I do get my Protein in with a shake but between food and Water I still can't get in 64oz of water!!!

2much - I'm so glad you posted this. I had my sleeve on 11/29 as well and am having a very similar experience. I had a nice loss during the 2 week liquid diet prior to surgery, then pretty consistent loss the first 10 days or so after surgery, but now I seem to be stuck. I'm chalking it up to the fact that I'm not getting very many calories in, and perhaps my body is still adjusting. It's frustrating to say the least.

I felt the same way-sleeved Dec 1st. I gained 12 pounds from the iv fluids. I was able to get that off in the following week but it has been slow since. I did have my husband take my measurements. We did this a few days before surgery. When I added it all up I had lost 21.25 inches!!!!!. So the scale may not be moving as quickly as I want-I am seeing the evidence in other ways. I don't dread walking in front of a reflective surface-window or mirror. So I will accept that I will lose but it will be slower then I want. But I am still losing. Hang in there.

After the first week i lost 9.6 lbs today when i weighed in i only lost 2.6lbs =( i was really disapointed with myself but i guess our bodys are still adjusting to the huge change. Hopefully next week will be better for us all.

I was sleeved on 11/29 too. I have lost 26 lbs. so far and Monday will begin soft foods on week 3. I have also stalled with losing weight. Seems like when I started pureed food it slowed things down. I think it's your body readjusting to your caloric intake. Excuse the TMI but bowel movements have once again begun as well. So, hopefully it will begin again. I have an appt. with my MD this coming Thursday so I will ask them then. I can't wait to get back on my AeroPilates machine in another 3-4 weeks. Then it will melt off.

2much, and everyone..... yes, my sugeon also took me off my dieuretics, which I have taken for YEARS and YEARS, and hate to pieces because it made me pee constantly.

I asked my Nut about it, and she said that, especially after surgery, it is so hard to get the sleevers to drink enough Water that they don't want us eliminating it. After that, we'll see how much weight we lose, we might not need it!

I lost 18 pounds in my first week, gained back 2 in my second.... and now I'm in my third. I'm afraid to weigh myself!! BUT... today I fit into a regular SIZE 18 pair of wool trousers that I have not been able to wear for five yearas. HOORAY!!! HAPPINESS DANCE!!! I was almost into a 22 before surgery.... so progress.

You can bet I was strutting my stuff around the office today. I must have looked crazy, LOL.

Keep up the good work... Cinderella

I was sleeved dec1. I am only down 8 lbs since surgery. I thought the weight would just drop off. I guess I fantasized that I would be down 30 lbs the first month, but it's not going to happen. I have lost a ton in inches though. I just keep telling myself to be patient. At least we all are "losers" though. : )

I was also sleeved on Dec 1st and had my 2 week check up on Tuesday 12/14. To my surprise I had lost 22 pounds. I was astonished to say the least. I have now started my mushie diet and I'm sure I will slow down. I am trying to prepare myself for any stalls and now that without surgery I would not be losing at all. Stay positive and know that it will come.....

I have come to the conclusion that my body may be resisting my greatly reduced caloric intake and going into starvation mode coupled with the fact that I am staying well hydrated which adds some weight. Anyway, I am glad I am not the only one experiencing this. Thank you everyone for your replies. And Dawn, I am getting in my fluids with the help of Crystal light. Walmart sells the Great Value brand, and I love the Strawberry-Orange-Banana flavor. And, after the first 10 days or so, I can swallow much more than the tiny sips I did at first. I can swallow about an ounce to two ounces in one swallow with no discomfort at all. I also mainly use Isopure for my one Protein Drink. I sometimes use the shakes, but they don't go down as well, I feel too full, and they are so sweet, they make me want to gag. I have advanced to eating chicken, eggs, tuna, cottage cheese, string cheese, etc. I try to get my Protein in with my food as much as possible, but if that doesn't happen, I supplement with protein drinks.(

(I corrected my first post to say that I lost an additonal 10 lbs the second week.)

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
