Infuriating Marie Claire blog about fat people on TV

Recommended Posts

Well written JuilaRH!!!

Maybe we should all write the author and "suggest" easy ways to be in control of her anorexia. How hard is it to eat a couple of donuts a day? I mean that would solve her anorexia problem right? Simple. Why didn't she think of that.

Ppffftttt! What a biotch!

Sadly there are so many people that think we chose to be obese. If we only put that fork down we could be thin. I have had so many people offer to help me diet since I decided to have wls. Oh wow I have never thought about trying that before. Just thought it would be fun to have major surgery and have 85% of my stomach cut out. Seriously I would love to see what this lady looks like so we could analyze all of her flaws.

Although that was an excellently written email, I'm willing to bet she didn't read it. I'm sure she deleted it without reading it at all. Now, her editor may read it. I heard about this Marie Claire debacle here on the forum, down in the rant & raves section and I responded to it. Later that day I went to a meeting. Halloween is coming and there was a lot of candy circulating the room. Everyone took some and was in a good mood. Then this painfully skinny woman starts exclaiming loudly to the entire (large) conference room, "my GOD, how many calories are in that [caramel pop], oh GOD don't tell me- hahaha!" This in turn made the entire room start grumbling about calories. So, the next day, I'm in the coffee shop waiting on my tea, and she comes in wearing running gear. She has a copy of Marie Claire. Everyone, I wanted to beat her unconscious with the damn thing. Just SEEING the magazine there felt like a slap in the face, knowing she probably agreed whole heartedly with that stupid senseless asshole. I wanted to take my FAT hand and slap her across her bony face.

I don't know much about organizing stuff online but I feel like a petition for her firing needs to be started. Let me tell you another story; years ago I wanted to join the Peace Corps. Although fat at 240 lbs and 5'3", I was also very fit and healthy and had doctor's letters saying so. Still, the Peace Corps rejected me out of hand because of my size - flat out. Long story short, an online group of women from Fat?So!.com rallied together and sent so many letters to Peace Corps HQ that they changed their minds. I would like to point out that I finished my two year commitment in my country and the skinniest girl from my group who ran marathons, DIDN'T LAST THE FIRST F***ING YEAR.

So, I know that we can band together and stand up for ourselves. This kind of discrimination would not be tolerated by an employee for one heartbeat if you inserted a word describing ethnicity, religion, or sexual orientation. When we don't stand up for ourselves, we affirm in their minds that they have the legitimate right to make us feel shame and to degrade us.

As ridiculous and ignorant has her blog was...as much as it seems like she still hasn't "got it", as much as her nasty rant triggers my fears about how I might be seen by people I would like to impress positively....I don't want to turn into her... or act like her, or get down to her level. I'm glad this thing has blown up. She is taking the brunt of the anger of thousands of people who have had it up to HERE with similar bad behavior for years. So many of the responsive comments are smart and genuine. The voice of intelligent decent. This one post has made her infamous. It will probably haunt her for the rest of her career. She might even get IT some day. She might have just done the one thing at the right time to move this rotten topic into the light. So thanks Maura...it hurt, but it felt sooo good to be seeing the unfolding of all this poetic justice. Perhaps the next time someone sees a "fatty" walking across the room, and the mental negativity starts in their head...they will stop and wonder for just a second, "Do I really know whats going on here? Do I really know anything about this person? Really?"

Attacking someone for being fat should be a hate crime.

She posted this:

I would really like to apologize for the insensitive things I've said in this post. Believe it or not, I never wanted anyone to feel bullied or ashamed after reading this, and I sorely regret that it upset people so much. A lot of what I said was unnecessary. It wasn't productive, either.

I know a lot of people truly struggle to lose weight — for medical and psychological reasons — and that many people have an incredibly difficult time getting to a healthy size. I feel for those people and I'm truly sorry I added to the unhappiness and pain they feel with my post.

Ya know, calling MC's advertisers and telling them you will no longer buy MC or their products if they support this kind of attitude is the best way to really see change.

absolutely DJackson, people only perk up and pay attention when you hit them in their wallets. As for her mea culpas and apologies, they aren't worth the paper they are written on. I'll bet dollars to donuts that the apologies are at her editors behest, they are not genuine. I'll also bet that when she submitted that article she probably thought she was going to be praised and feted within the fashion/appearance/beauty community. For all I know, that may be what is happening because mainstream image pimps are pretty f***ed up.

Does anyone know how to start one of those Facebook petition things? Along the lines of "Do Not Purchase Marie Claire until Maura X is Fired".

The worst part of all of this? It goes to my most vulnerable fragile part, the part that says "you have no right to stand up for yourself because they must be right in some way and you are worthless." =(

The difference between you and Mike & Molly is that they don't stick their fingers down their throats everytime they eat!

So go screw yourself!

While I realize this subject is very touchy and can bring out many negative emotions in many folks, myself included... I just don't see how this is productive at all. Just my opinion...

In her info it said she has never been in love and wondering if she ever will. Gee I wonder why.

I have to say that as much as I dislike what the author said, I think she is really troubled. And I think that the true crime here is by Marie Claire for letting someone post their self-hate so publicly, and then not retracting it. I think that what she said is foul, don't get me wrong. I truly get the sense that she posted about some of her own completely unexamined demons and that she's going to spend a lot of time unraveling this experience. She's obviously very young, her writing is trite at best, and she has a lot of growing up to do. But, the seasoned editors at MC should be ashamed of themselves, and they should have retracted it. I would love to organize a boycott. For one blogger to say what she did is a mistake (but one made by a person with serious issues--anorexia, which means her hatred for her body is so great, she is willing to starve), but to propagate that mistake by not retracting it in a magazine offered for public consumption to young, impressionable girls is unacceptable. Bottom line: promoting hate is unacceptable.

I am guessing if we go to a bookstore. flip through a copy of Marie Claire (and DON'T buy), we could easily figure out who their major advertisers are. I also like the Facebook boycott idea. Does anyone know how to get this started?

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
