What are your slider- and non slider- foods?

Recommended Posts

I am trying to configure a list of foods that are slider foods (digest easily and can be overeaten in a short amount of time with no difficulty), and a list of foods that can only be tolerated in small amounts and leave a good deal of satiety. Can anyone give me examples of their sliders and their "winner foods"? I'm still at the testing stage of what works for me and my weight is starting to creep back up due to the wrong food choices.

Also, can anyone tell me when it might be safe to eat cooked can green Beans, or cooked broccoli? I have been missing my veggies and know that If i could have a meal out of steamed broccoli and grilled chicken i would be a happy camper!! :001_tongue:

Jillian

You might want to check out this thread that Tiffykins posted. Its got lots of information on post op guidelines on what to eat - foods which will be 'winners' for you.

Did you not get a nutritionist when you had your surgery with any guidelines from them?

Basically if you stay within the guidelines of the good foods and stay away from 'bad' ones then you should easily be able to avoid weight gains.

I can't recall when you had your surgery - but if you're sticking to your guidelines from your nutritionist then you shouldn't really be gaining, unless you are having bod foods all the time. The sleeve is a tool.... but not something to help you eat bad food choices and still lose weight.... to get to your goal you'll need to exercise and eat a healthy diet, and confront any issues you have with food. Perhaps your therapy you said you had started can help with this.

Good luck

Things I stay away from except for the week before my period (hormonal carb eater, that's me): ice cream, Cookies, halva, milk chocolate (I eat 70% cocoa chocolate ordinarily, can't manage more than about one piece so it's fine to eat all the time).

Things that really keep the full feeling long: cottage cheese, chicken,

Things that tend to make me queasy: bread, mashed potatoes

I must stay away from chips, ice cream, candy, cakes. Those were my main contributors to my weight. I love to bake, and must stay away from doing that right now. My best healthy fillers are chicken, beef, eggs, and a good hearty salad with chicken in it. You shouldn't have any trouble with the veggies you mentioned, I can eat any veggies.

Thanks for your input guys! I've found that oatmeal (whole oats, not quick oats) made with splenda, cinnamon, and added Protein powder, is one of the most filling foods i can eat. The combination of the Fiber and Protein sits in my stomach a long time and it is a low GI carb (low impact on your insulin levels). I've also found that beef Jerky and Pork rinds fill me up easily, maybe because they are high protein with zero carbs. Also, fruit, very very filling. It only takes a couple bites of canteloupe to fill me up. But for some odd reason, if i splurge on something bad like m&ms, i can eat a king size bag with no discomfort whatsoever. It's very odd how the sleeve works. Obviously food choices and self control are the number one key to success!

I'm still scared to try my veggies- i dont know why. I feel as if i'll get sick from them. I know i won't truely know until i have tried them, but ive been wanting cooked broccoli for so long, i don't know how much to have and where to stop so that i won't make myself sick. So i just avoid it. I'd like to start incorporating veggies back into my diet so it is balanced again, i just want to do it right!

I have been eating regular veggies since week 4. No problems at all. I eat steamed broccoli several times a week. Also in week 4 my surgeon added salads. I really love my raw veg, and salads keep me satisfied.

Do you worry at all about the fat in pork rinds? I know they have protein, but is it enough to justify the fat, that is what I'm trying to decide!!! I've been wanting to ask this question and keep forgetting!!!! HELP!!! :biggrin0:

broccoli was my favorite veggie post op. I had it every night... sometimes steamed... sometimes broiled with sea salt... I couldn't get enough. I have had it one time since surgery, I think at about 4 or 5 weeks. I could eat it but I didn't enjoy it like I used too. Now I enjoy sauteed zucchini and mushrooms or some steamed collard greans. They just go down a little easier. I've bought some broccoli a few times since then but just never got around to eating it. I think I'm just not a broccoli girl anymore.... but I still love my other veggies.

Strange how our tastes change after surgery. Before surgery I only drank water... for 51 years. After surgery- I cannot stand plain Water. I have to add crystal light or special k Protein mix.

This is a side effect I wish had not happened. I used to easily drink 64 oz of plain water before surgery.

I love broccoli and have it several times a week without issue. I also love salad and that goes down fine too.

Actually I haven't come across anything at all that doesn't go down just fine.

tuna salad is a major tummy filler for me, and chicken and fish. Steak usually is too tough for me. I try not to eat a lot of bread, b/c I need the Protein to fill me up. Maybe a half slice or one slice maybe. Tortillas (corn) generally get stuck so I avoid them b/c then I don't eat enough of other stuff. If sweets are around I try to only eat a bite or two - I don't have much craving for them. Ice cream makes me feel sick. I have had an aversion to cooked veggies since surgery, but I like raw veggies especially carrots and tomatoes. I cannot seem to digest eggs properly now so I've been avoiding them for the most part. We used to eat a LOT of eggs.< /p>

A grazer food for me this weekend was fried chicken strips, homemade. I could eat one an hour or so haha. I was so glad when they were gone. I love my fried chicken!

I wasn't eating a lot of veggies but someone suggested the supplement that is made from fruits and veggies. Is it FiberCon? I can't think of the name. But I bought it at Target and it was 90 pills for $10. It works! Yeah I 'go' now every day. I am so thankful. I think being constipated makes me stall worse - are you 'goin'?

It is so strange. I don't enjoy coffee any more and pre-op I put a packet of Stivia in my iced tea, and not, I cannot find the right amount. Half a packet is too much, I don't like it without one, I'm trying to find the right amount. Those are my biggies as far as changes, but those are big one for me! =)

I have that too - I've never been a great water drinker, though. But for several months after the surgery I could barely get it down at all. With some low cal flavour mixed in it was fine. In my case I had complications (bleeding) the day after surgery and the surgeon visited and had me drink one sip of water which immediately came back up. Perhaps I just learned to avoid water (and surgeons).

But tastes have changed a bit for me, too. Regular milk chocolate now tastes so disgustingly sweet I can barely stand it. Also jam with high sugar content makes me queasy. Oh, and for some reason mushrooms, even cooked, don't go down very well: I burp a lot after eating them so I avoid them. Noodles probably swell once swallowed, so those I avoid too as I get faintly sick if I eat them. Meatballs for some reason sit like a rock inside, so I can't eat those either.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
