Changes with Taste Post Op - Newbie Here! :)

Recommended Posts

I am attempting to purchase alot of the Protein products to stock up before surgery (March 13). Can anyone tell me if you liked your protein powders during pre-op, did you taste buds change post op finding that you could no longer tolerate the protein after surgery?

After much, much, much reading, I am beginning to rethink my plans in purchasing so many products prior to surgery. I am just wondering did anyone find that their taste significantly changed?

Any Help if much appreciated..

PS. I just love this board and the new sleeve family since joining. :thumbup1:

i personally would not do that right now. . i'd wait til your sleeved. . . your not going to need all that right away anyhow. . . you'll be on broth, Water, sf Jello, and popsicles the first week. . . then at your 1 week dr appt you can talk with the nutritionist and together you can figure it out. . . i was lucky, my taste to foods was not affected, however, it was to water. . . tastes very very metallic, so i add crystal light to my water and it's ok now. . but don't waste your money right now. . .

Don't know what your post-op guidelines are, but a lot of people (me included) are on Clear Liquids for only 1-2 days, then it's full liquids including Protein supplements. One way to go would be to order single-serving samples of various flavors/brands. You can do that at vitalady.com pretty reasonably. :thumbup1:

My tastes changed significantly, and several times during my post-op recovery. I would find a Protein tolerable one week, then the next I couldn't choke it down.

I bought sample packs from vitalady.com and from netrition.com

The only flavor and brand I could ever truly tolerate for any decent period of time is:

Bodybuilding.com - Optimum 100% whey Protein - With Faster-Acting HYDROWHEY! On sale now!

They offer a sample pack, but I only ever used the extreme milk chocolate. My husband uses it as a recovery protein after weight lifting.

I would not buy any big tubs of protein supplements. I found the texture and smell to be more bothersome post-op than the taste most of the time. But, my tastes changed quite a bit.

Thanks soo very much!!! Your information and recommendation was most helpful. On a lighter note, I have to admit, posting this questioning and having you guys answer the question, made me realize one of the most important reasons in combating this weight loss journey. That is, not buying food and/or "stocking up" on food in mass. This is too funny; but, I started to see that there is no reasons as to why I need to purchase $100 or $200 doll ars of food products "in advance". I know I may be talking to myself; however, you guys have already taught me the importance of shredding this thinking.

@ Tiff.. you are such an inspiration and I thank God for you!!! Thanks again to everyone as I am going to be really listening, reading and learning for many of you as I move throughout this journey!

God Bless!:lol0:

I am STUCK with boxes and boxes of Carnation and Body Fortress, both of which I LOVED before the surgery. As you can guess, I cannot swallow either of them now!!!! I have tried dozens of brands and have not found one I can drink yet. I am waiting on my latest round of samples to arrive so I can throw them out too...LOL! I do get the Body Fortress Liquid Protein Shots from Walmart. They don't taste great either but they are a small amount and easy to swallow to get my Protein in.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
