I'm scheduled for a band to VGS revision on October 30, but will also be having my gallbladder removed at the same time. My surgeon (who banded me in 2006) said it will be an outpatient procedure just like my band was. After reading about all the people that went to Mexico for surgery and were in the hospital for several days, I'm wondering about being able to go home the same day.

Has anyone else on this board gone home the same day? Any complications from doing so? My doc is right next door to a hospital and I do barium swallows, fills, etc. in his office which is not far from where I live (Dallas metro area). I'm not worried about having a problem and not being near medical help, but just wonder how others handled pain, etc. at home.

I still have my band, so he will remove it when he does the sleeve and gall bladder removal. I'm not sure the total number of sleeves he's done, but he's done around 216 since the first of 2007, with 223 band to sleeve revisions. He still does more gastric bypass surgeries, as that's what most insurance co.'s will pay for. He's done 1787 of them and 817 lap bands. He's also a general surgeon, so he's done thousands of gall bladder removals, appendectomies, etc.

Sounds like he has a lot of varied experience. Keep us posted on how you are doing!

Oh hell no! If my doctor wanted me to go home 24 hours after surgery I would have found another doctor. Dr. Aceves was the Doc I choose JUST because he was so exact and caring. The second day after surgery I was the worst, I slept all day and was in pain. I was there three days and soooo glad of it. IT is just a way that the doc can make sure you are ok no leaks before they let you go.

I have really liked the after care offered my Dr Aceves, any time I call they return my call if I do not get them directly or answer any questions I have on the spot. DOC has been great!!! His staff superb!

I was also a self-pay because my insurance company wouldn't pay for the VSG. Like you I was worried that if I had a complication, it could be devastating financially. However, my surgeon was very experienced, and I was fine. If your surgeon has substantial experience doing VSG, I think the chances of complications are very, very low.

i went on a tuesday and was home wednesday at 530pm. had a leak test wednesday morning and drinking broth, jello and clear liquids. i could have ice chips and water right after surgery. i am sure everyone and their doctor is different.

I had surgery on a Tuesday at 7:30 am and went home Wednesday around 6:00 pm. My husband was nervous for me but everything was fine. You need to listen to your body and help your doc make the right decision for you.:001_unsure:
