Banded 9/12/13 & starving

I was banded 2 days ago and granted I'm supposed to be on Clear Liquids only with the surgery and small pouch and all but I feel like I'm still hungry. Maybe its all mental but what have any of you had to eat/drink that you have found filling in the 1st few weeks post surgery?

Congratulations on getting banded...hope your situation gets better. It must be real hard, stay strongand drinl your liquids... I'm doing the pre-op diet and I kind of know what you feel those hunger pains are something else. ? Do you feel the band? do you feel tightness? do you feel different? Just curious, cuz my surgery is on 9/27 Good luck and keep us posted.

Hi Cingee. No, you don't feel the band, no you don't feel tightness, and no, you don't feel different. It's not until you start to eat solids and realize once you get in the green zone that a small amount of food goes a long way. I am still amazed at how much less food I eat since being banded and that I am no longer starving, and can feel satisfied almost all the time.

I had a treat tonight. I went to a Ramen noodle restaurant for dinner and had three gyoza and a small bowl of Soup. There's alot of sodium in all that stuff so I eat it very seldom but when I do want something like that, I go for it. Anyway, it's now six hours after that meal and I'm still fine. No hunger at all. Before banding, I'd have had a big old bowl of Soup, and at least twice the amount of gyoza. And maybe dessert or another appetizer for sure. I'm not sure what the calorie count was but I'd say it was a fraction of what the calorie count would have been pre banded.

Yeah. I was on the pre op diet before also and it sucked then so it just continues sucking. Lol. I cant feel the band. Or at least I havent tried to feel for it thru my skin. There IS a mild tightness that I feel in the top of my abdomen when I am nearing my drink limit. Good luck with your surgery. That will be here before u know it.

Hunger is normal and happens' date=' especially on liquids. But it's imperative you stick to your doctor's post op diet regardless of hunger. Your body needs time to heal.[/quote']

Yeah. I'm for sure sticking to the diet I got from my doc and nutritionist but I was just wondering if there was a specific drink or meal/drink order that helped people get thru the first 4 weeks better then I think I will do.

Thanks for replying. I am real nervous and excited. I truly appreciate the information provided, I was just super curious. How long were you out of work? I work in an office setting and they told me that I could go back to work on Monday...But I took monday & Tuesday off..so a total of 5 days including surgery day, weekend plus Monday & Tuesday....I'm wonderingif that enough time...

i'm doing optifast given by my doctor and this has been great with the hunger pains....

the best thing is to keep drinking (i used my Protein Shakes as my food)

and sf popsicles saved me.......of course you (think) you are hungry because

its all liquid you are consuming...just stay busy and drink alot......most times we think we are hungry because its dinner time or other people are eating....you are tight as you are recently banded and very swollen on the inside...as mis and sharp stated, following dr's instructions are for best results...but i suggest more Protein and def patience as its a process.........more mental than anything...BEST of luck

I work in an office setting and they told me that I could go back to work on Monday...But I took monday & Tuesday off..so a total of 5 days including surgery day, weekend plus Monday & Tuesday....I'm wonderingif that enough time... Everyone is different when it comes to recovery. You may be just fine with taking the two workdays off but you may not. As long as your employer is OK with you being flexible, you should just play it by ear. I also work in an office but I am fortunate enough to be able to work from home. I was banded on a Monday and was back online the next day but didn't go back into the office until the following week. Not having to commute and physically be in the office made all the difference for me.

Hi there! I was banded on 9/12 as well. I do not feel hungry but my tummy has certainly been rumbling. The thought of real food right now makes me queasy. I have found that the Protein shakes work pretty well. I just drink them slowly while the family has dinner. I also LOVE the Popsicles (sugar free). I am also out walking as much as possible to move that gas around. Had a shower yesterday and felt like a new person!

Are you on Clear liquids for a week and then thicker liquids? That is my post op diet. From there I will go to mushies. I don't know about you, but for me the shoulder pain has been worse than the abdominal pain. This is especially true when I do the breathing exercises, it feels like someone is stabbing me in the shoulder!

I made home make chicken broth and drank it everythime I felt hungry then I did creamy Soups, Hated the protient drinks drank as much as I wanted till I wasn't hungry and did loss alittle bit but the weight lost came 2 mos after wards and I had some fills..so just heal right now and the next 6 wks. You are learning to eat and drink slowly and drink tons of Water then comes food and all this will make more sense.

I did the Protein Drinks to get at least 60 gms per day and I never got hungry. Bored but not hungry. I had my surgery on Friday and went back to work on Monday. I'm home health nurse and that meant alot of bending and getting in and out of my car. I wouldn't do it again. I think if I had taken Monday and Tuesday off I would have been better off. I felt like myself by Wednesday.

Yeah. Those SF Popsicles have been awesome and I have also taken a real liking to the low cal Decaf Maxwell House French vanilla international cafe mixes. I get to graduate to Full liquids today which means SF puddings and low fat yoguart. I will go to mushies (baby food and pureed foods) by this weekend. I stay on that for a week then I get to introduce real (soft) foods in about 2 weeks.

I never had any shoulder pain after surgery. My pain is mostly in my abdoman. It's come down a lot today. I haven't needed any pain meds today yet. I hope your shoulder gets better. That sucks.

      I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

      Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

      Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
