Jacksonville Surgical Assoc (Dr. Cywes) closing--need new Dr. In Jax

Recommended Posts

Just got a very disturbing letter in the mail today. I had my LB done with Dr. Cywes Feb. 2011, and have done very well. I have lost about 80 pounds. Turns out, he is closing all clinical practices the end of this month. I am beside myself with sadness and a little bit of anger. I feel so abandoned :(.

Anyone know what happened or why he is shutting his doors?

Most importantly, I need good recommendations for other LB doctors in Jacksonville, Fl that take on transfer patients. Anyone in the area love their doctor?

I would strongly recommend you to see Dr. Baptista off Baymeadows Rd. I couldn't be happier with his care and the progress I've made since I had my surgey. :-) He is the most caring doctor I've had in my life. His staff is very helpfull too specially Rosie. So sorry to hear your doctor has abandonned you. A friend of mine was Cywes patient and was informed the same yesterday by email. She called Dr. Baptista's office and is transferring her care to him. I wish you the best and good luck!

I spoke with Dana this am. They are having an office meeting this morning that should yield final information for us. Looks like for us in the Valdosta area we will be turned over to Dr. Melton from Moultrie. Sounds as if all goes well, we will still go to the Valdosta office for our appointments, not sure where our surgeries will be though. I did a search on Dr. Melton here on this site. He's affiliated with Colquitt Regional and Smith Northview. That's a whole lot closer that having to go to Brunswick, GA or Jacksonville, FL. My next appointment is currently scheduled for June 14 (physician managed weight loss). At that point my surgery request was likely to be submitted to Tri-Care because is was my 3d appointment.

Thank you so much for the information. Let us know if you hear anything else.

I called the office last week and spoke to Wendy in the Jax office. She said that Dr. C has decided to go back to pediatrics, and got an "offer he couldn't refuse" in West Palm Beach. She also said, that knowing Dr. C, he would not be formally recommending any doctors here in Jax. We are advised to go to lapband.com and enter our zip code and find our own doctor.....thats pretty crappy in my opinion. I have an appointment scheduled with him next Tuesday, May 28.

I can't believe that he would still schedule surgeries for the month after he will be leaving. That's just awful :(. I am so sorry. I am a little over 2 years out and am freaked out. I can't imagine how his patients feel that have just had their surgeries or were supposed to be having them soon.

I was surprised to find out their office was closing with such short notice. No matter what kind of opportunity that was offered to him, it really seems like a disservice to both his patients and employees to close the office without proper warning. Luckily, I only get checked out once a year and I can wait until something else is set up locally again. kkua- I am happy to see another clinic might be opening in Valdosta... I really wasn't looking forward to having to drive to Jacksonville for appointments again... although I really loved Baptista and will go back there if nothing opens up here.

What I really and surprised by is that I called the Jacksonville office last Wednesday to ask if there were any support group meetsings in Valdosta, and they didn't mention the closure to me. On Friday, I received the notice in the mail.

I heard Dr Baptista is waiving transfer fees for anyone interested in going to him. He is an awesome Doctor. I was initially a patient of Dr Cywes from Jan 2012 - August 2012. After alot of frustrating dealings with his staff (not filing my claim on time, phone calls never returned, miisinformation, etc), my wife and I switched to Dr Baptista. It was the best decision we ever made!!

I live in GA and have been driving 3 hours to see Cywes because I believed he was passionate about bariatrics. I was so devoted to seeing only him. I have an appt with Dr Kelly in Savannah but I am not sure about him. I cannot find reviews or anything for him. I have been eatting Cywes way for so long, I feel like I am gonna have to learn a new Docs rules and basically start over. Scared of what will happen if I have an emergency since I am still just 3 weeks post op.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
