Hello everyone, I am so glad that I found this site. I was banded 3/13/13 and so far I'm feeling awesome! I am so happy that a place like this exists and I hope to get to know all of you very well.

A little about me. I am 29 years old and I live in Texas. I currently work in childcare and I hold a degree in Sociology and am working on a Master's Degree in Social Work.

I have read many post here about complications post op, luckily I have been doing very well, so well in fact its almost like the band isn't there. The one thing that I am struggling with are the negative comments and horror stories that everyone insist on telling me about the band. I know several people who have had the band and have either had it removed or not been successful with their band. I was wondering, how do you all deal with people that insist on being negative about your choice to have the band and how do you keep the fears that you have in check when it comes to the subject of band rejection and slippage (which I know are not very common issues)?

Thanks!

Venita

Hello and welcome!

When I deal with people speaking ignorance, I try to enlighten them with facts. For instance, only 5% of Lap Band complications resulting in removal are by no fault of the patient. The rest are the patient failure, not the band failure, because the patient wasn't doing what they were supposed to do.

Unfortunately, the fact those that are howling loudest and most often are the ones that are having problems (usually self induced ones). What you don't see is all the happy, healthy people who've been successful with their band because they're too busy enjoying their lives to be bothered posting all over the internet.

Hang in there and don't let the poorly informed naysayers get you down :)

Thank you Missy. I try not to let it bother me but I've been a ball of nerves with this whole process. I know in my heart that I made the right decision for ME but I get a lot of the "why didn't you just get the sleeve" comments....obviously they've never heard of "dumping" lol

Missy is right on target, misery loves company and people usually don't shout from the roof tops (although I might when I hit my goal :)) about success, only the bad things. And remember each person is different and you may never have a problem so don't overwhelm yourself with all the horror stories and listen to what your body tells you and go to your doctor if you think something is wrong. In the beginning, I was a bit of a hypochondriac as every little thing I experienced I was contacting my NUT or doctor and now that I've learned more, I'm much more at ease.

You know, when I got my band 14 months ago, I had 2 friends getting Gastric Bypass within a month of me. For months I heard how stupid I was for not getting Bypass like them and how even the Sleeve would be better than the Band. I heard how I wouldn't lose as much as they would and I'd still be fat.

Fast forward to today... one of the Bypass friends has only lost 60 pounds, and that was all in the first couple months and she's slowly gaining it back. The other Bypass friend only lost 30 pounds. I, with my Band that they bashed and told me I was stupid to get, have lost almost 200 pounds.

Needless to say, no one tells me I was "stupid" to get the Band anymore ;)

Thank you Lap Band Master. So far I feel so great its almost too good to be true! I was banded Wednesday and I haven't had in nausea and I've been able to keep everything I eat down. My goal at the moment is to surround myself with nothing but positive people that will support me on my new journey. I could fill a page with all the negative things that I'm told....from slippage to "you won't lose all the weight you want to lose with the band". I am really glad to have found this site and I plan on being a very active member on the board. Thank you guys in advance for the support and advice.

Hello Delightful521... If you believe that you selected the right procedure, then you have. We know that you selected the least invasive surgery. Just because they failed doesn't mean you are going to fail. Actually the fact that you are so worried about the possibility of failure will probably help you succeed even more. Ignore the negativity. Keep your faith and you will be successful. Good Luck!

Missy, you just answered one of the most annoying comments that I get. My goal, like yours, is to lose over 200lbs with the band. I have had sooooooooooo many people tell me that I should have gotten the sleeve or bypass because I wouldn't lose the weight that I wanted with only the lap band. I KNOW that I can and will be successful because I am motivated and ready to change my life for the better. I am so happy to see that you have lost so much weight with the band and now i know it is possible.

Oh there's other like me on here, too! Floridays and Cazzy both lost over 200 pounds each and both are at their goal weights! There's a lot of people on here who've lost way over 100 or even 200 pounds.

I'm still about 60 pounds from my goal weight but I know I'll get there eventually... and so will you! :)

Delightful, you will find the negative people every where including on this site. I feel we have a choice and I chose to succeed and I did. You can lose the weight it is slow but it is possible, never give up and your victory is proving all the negative people wrong.

No one in my circles know anything about the different WLS methods but if someone was aware and asked me, I think I would say that I've thought a lot about my choices and I'm leaving the vertical sleeve choice as my ace in the hole. If the band fails me, I still have the option of the sleeve where if I would have went with the sleeve or bypass, I would have no other choices.

With the band, I can eat the same foods I ate before WLS, only now I won't eat as much.

I got banded 2/25/13 and it's been nothing but an up hill journey. I'm so thankful to have people around me to push me and also encourage me to do my best. At this point in my life I really don't care what people think or say...I've learned that what God has for me is for me. To be honest some people will say and do anything to try to steal your joy! I know this was the best thing that I could have ever done to make me BETTER!!!... I'm also so happy that I was able to find a site that can support me during my transformation. I tell people that I'm a butterfly that is coming out of her cocoon!! B) The bottom line is keep your head up and most of all keep the faith!!!

Good Luck!!!

Not everyone who has complications is negative. I just had my band removed and I don't negatively impact any upcoming banders. I had my success but then had complications which I knew was a possibility. To the person who said its mostly the banders fault, I take that offensive. I did everything right with my band and still got to this point. So I guess I'm just part of the 5% or that's not correct. But I wish you all the luck with your band!

I stated the 5%, and take it offensively if you must, but I don't know you or your story so obviously it wasn't aimed at you.

And it is correct, by the way. There are numerous clinical studies that support that percentage.

"Major complications requiring re-operation occurred in 106 (5.9%) patients."- http://www.obesitylapbandsurgery.com/statmain.html

"About one in 20 patients had the band removed during the study period. (5%)"- http://www.futurity.org/health-medicine/weight-stays-off-long-after-lap-band-surgery/

You can't argue statistics based on facts.

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
