Home vs Gym Workout

Recommended Posts

Hello- I had lapband surgery on 2/14/12. I have lost 70 pounds so far. I started out going to the gym 5 days a week and working out pretty hard and steady there. I loved it, my problem is I have 3 kids and 2 grandkids and pretty active with them and also work full time. The only time I would have to go to a gym is 4am or 9 pm and then I live about 30 minutes from the closest one. I just can't stay committed to work out at those times as I know it will be very difficult. So, I'm looking for suggestions to workout at home. I have a treadmill and looking to buy a Bowflex. Are there any suggestions for exercises to do at home besides videos? I'm looking more for strength training and toning. My biggest problem areas are underarms and thighs. Thanks for any and all suggestion. I am very uncoordinated so Richard Simmons (don't laugh) is the best exercise video for me. Although, I would love to try the P90X.

You can YouTube anything on the list you don't know already. Very effective and it doesn't take an hour.

You can do almost everything on the treadmill if you have incline! It's great for toning! Congratulations on your weight loss!

cans of food and bags of potatoes make great weights. Elastic bands are cheap and can help tone just as if lifting weights. Give those grand babies airplane rides on your feet kids too depending on age/size.

Full disclosure 43 year old woman no kids. Bought Xbox 360 used and Kinect. Using it to do Zumba and dancing games. GREAT exercise. You can even have multiple dancers on some games. So you could get your grandkids involved. Enjoying it way more than I expected.

By far my most favorite work out is with my Kinect and dance games, I have them all. I can sweat for 2 hours when I get so frustrated with the treadmill after 15 minutes. I just got the Nike trainer and going to play that today.

If you go the exercise game route look for used ones. New games are expensive. Check out games spot, new berry comics, even best buy. Bought the Nike Trainer. Have only done the evaluation part. Not sold on it yet. As to the ones I like Zumba Rush, Just dance 3 (JD 4 has a more difficult user interface), Just Dance Disney. I found Dance Central harder.

I wake up and do Insanity in my living room at 4 AM. I have two small kids and work part time and so I have very little free time during the day. I decided against nap time workouts cause I was constantly being interrupted with potty breaks lol

Thank you for all of the wonderful suggestions. I'm going to try the insanity workout and I'm going to buy the Zumba for the xbox to try those things.

Wow congrats in the excellent weight loss and deduction to exercise. You can certainly get a great workout at home. Regarding Insanity it is an awesome workout - basically it's like P90x only it's longer anaerobic work with shorter aerobic intermixed, as opposed to the reverse as with P90x - Insanity has even more Plyometrics (jumping) and therefore it isn't really a good place to "start" exercise or if a person has or is susceptible to knee and other lower extremity joint or back issues so keep that in mind.

Mix strength and cardio - keeping it always different and not overworking the same muscle group will bring the best results. A great tool that works strength and aerobic while really improving stability and balance is the Bosu. Cheap at about $100, portable and stores easily.

I agree about not starting with insanity, its really hard and if u have never worked out with a DVD b4 u may want to try something else. I use a 4 DVD set of Bob Harper. I got it at target. It's very challenging and a whole body workout.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

So proud of you Cat. Getting into those smaller size clothes is half the fun isn't it?. Keep up the good work!!!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
