Swollen vein after IV

Recommended Posts

Did any of you get a swollen, bruised, pain leading to the wrist vein after your IV?

My band removal was 1 week and 4 days ago. My vein was sore for a few days, then I noticed some swelling. But today there's a bruise over the swollen area and pain is starting to go up my wrist.

Anyone experience this?

Why the heck did they put it in your wrist, I hate when they do that, it's the most painful area they can use. Sounds as though you have a really sore reaction, though it's probably not serious, put warm wash clothes on it for awhile and see if that doesn't help. Keep on eye on it for any redness, warmth or additional swelling and if it doesn't get any better, call the doc. I really don't understand why some of the medical personnel do things like that, it's so unnecessary for goodness sake.

Hope it feels better soon.

My hand was swollen, red, and tender for over a week after surgery. The nurse told me that it was just irritated from the anesthesia and pain medication. It eventually went away.

Shanna, I think some people are just prone to this type of thing. My arm/wrist always bruises at the very least, and does like yours at times, too. It makes no matter how "good" the phlebotomist is. It's just the way my body reacts to being "stuck."

Thanks guys for your feedback! It was actually put in on the top of my hand - sorry that wasn't clear. The pain is traveling toward my wrist, up the vein. La Madam, that's so ironic that you've had the same problem. Let me know what your doc says, ok.Leatha G - Thanks for giving it a name, thrombophlebits. The warm compresses are helping and when I looked it up "they" also say to take Ibuprofen, for the swelling. No change today. At least it's not getting worse. My hand is kind of achy, though. Oh, well - this, too shall pass...Have a great day,

I have the same thing. Eleven days and it is still bruised and sore. I just figured that I must bruise more easily than others.

I had a clot, a big one judging from the recovery time. While I had the IV it kept clogging. I am sure the painkiller (morphine?) didn't help because it burned so badly. When it was removed my whole forearm was swollen.

In later days, the swelling subsided, but the vein was hard. As it healed the tenderness moved from my hand, to my wrist, to a place in my forearm.

I don't remember when it finally cleared, but I was getting myself all worried about a possible stroke.

More typos recently, maybe there is something there?

It will probably be fine, but if you are anything like me... Enjoy your stress.

The needle came out, but was still under the skin, so all those shots they give you right before you leave went right into my hand. My hand was so swollen I couldn't make a fist. I kept telling the nurse something was wrong, because the injections were hurting so bad they made me double over, oh it burned so bad. She started fussing at me and told me she didn't chose to be operated on I did. Needless to say, she smarted back at the wrong person, I requested the head of that department and within minutes this unkind nurse was in my room apologizing.

I still have a tender spot where the needle was, over a year later.

I had my IV in the same place as you did and have the same symptoms but they are improving everyday (surgery date was 3/30). I still have a faint black and blue area that tracts the line of the vein and get twinges in the wrist. Some of the IV medications that are given are caustic to the vein and can cause inflammation or a chemical phlebitis. Sometimes the IV infiltrates when it slips out of the vein. If the pain becomes progressively worse as opposed to gradually better, it's time to see an MD.

Wow! Pretty common problem. No red streak or warmth - yea! There's only about an inch of my vein that is affected so I think it'll get better with time, like everyone else. If it gets worse or if I see a red streak, I'll call my doc.

Thanks so much - I feel much better about the whole thing!

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
