First Day of Solids. What is Normal?

Recommended Posts

First day of solids for me.

I haven't had a fill yet. Is it normal to have it feel a little weird when you first eat solids? What I mean is, I do feel more full than with mushies, thank heavens, because I was getting hungry, but it almost feels like food is stuck in there, like I ate a brick and it's laying in the tippy top of my stomach.

It was my first dinner of solid food that feels stuck. I had "fake pork ribs" It's vegetarian soy BBQ pork.

Or is it normal to have this reaction, some irritation, your first day?

Yes, it's normal. Just chew, chew, chew. If it is too uncomfortable, go back to mushies. If you have a lot of pain and your mouth starts watering, you have something stuck. dry swallow and try a little liquid and it will pass.

It's 5 am and I got up because the food is still in my pouch and I'm in pain. I can drink fine, but everything feels "stopped up". I'm also getting a reffering pain on my right , towards my back (by my armpit)

Help!

What if the food doesn't move??! It's been 12 hours and the pain in my back and the discomfort in my band area is increasing.:omg:

I loved the restriction I had when I was first banded. I would eat a few bites of chicken and poof...full. Then the swelling went down and I was eating just like before being banded. Just go slow, concentrate on what your band is telling you and you'll be fine.

Yes this is normal.

How are you doing? Did the food move on down?

Maybe stick with liquids today - you may be a little swollen from the irritation. Also, you may need to stick with mushies a little longer (a couple of days-then try solids again).

Feel better! I'm thinkin' about ya.

Hi ladies!

I did a search while up, and layed down on all fours like a dog, then jumped up and down.

(5:00 am) lol

I went back to bed with a heating pad, took a swig of MYBESTME's remedy Aloe juice, and I guess it went down during the sleep.

I woke up losing a lb. because the solid food really did keep me fuller, longer.

SO you think mushies for a few more days?

I've been on solids for a bit now, and I can feel most things I eat. I'm aware of it, but it is not discomfort. The only things that I really REALLY feel, that I'm afraid might become discomfort if I don't stop, and applesauce & bananas. I feel these way more than anything else, and for longer. Even when I drink a thick Fluid (protein shake) I feel it a bit. I've come to figure that it's just part of banding life. :uwelcome:

AH okay. I wan't sure if I irritated the puch because it's not ready or if this is just what it feels like when first re-introduced to solids.

Eating shouldn't be painful unless you're eating too much or too fast, but it doesn't sound like you're doing that at all. It sounds like you're being very careful. I don't know - maybe try mushies for your next meal - see how it goes and try solids later today, if it's feeling good. I sure wish I could be more helpful. Everyone is so different.

I'm glad you're feeling better and I hope you have a great rest of your day!

I may have eaten too fast. I have only had mashed potato today. Think I'll try some vegetarian sausage tonight and see how it goes.

Slowly this time...

It sounds like you just need to go slower or maybe start with an "easier" solid food. My surgeon told me today that it's not until you begin eating solids that you experience what having a small pouch does. I had complained that I did not feel full and had no problems getting anything down (started on soft diet 2 days ago). He told me what I am experiencing now is right on tract and that when I start solids (just under 3 weeks from now), I will feel resistance. Here's hoping! LOL.

After dinner report.:hungry:

I ate about 1/4 cup of food. It was "fake ground beef" vegatarian and a few pieces of fake sausage. Chew chew chew tiny pieces.

Although nothing feels stuck, my belly is NOT happy. I have a band of discomfort that wraps around my midback.

What do you think? Normal for first solids?

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
