Potatoes

Recommended Posts

Thought I would post this article as I found it rather interesting.

Potatoes are always getting a really bad rap, most of which is undeserved. Potatoes themselves are not fattening, it is what is added to them that causes the problems. Most people seem to think that they are another white food that should be avoided, that they are nutrient poor etc.

This is just one of many articles that would seem to suggest otherwise. In fact it now seems as though the humble spud could be a new superfood.

'The ultimate wonder food': Potatoes have more nutrients, Vitamins and minerals than traditional 'superfoods'

Ignored by dieters because they are 'fattening', few would class the potato as a 'wonder food' packed full of Vitamins, minerals and nutrients.

But the spud is actually better for the body than traditional superfoods - such as bananas, broccoli, beetroot, nuts and avocado, a study has found.

The researchers said people are wrong to shun it in favour of modern and more expensive alternatives.

Superfood: The potato has been disregarded as 'fattening' and shunned in favour of alternatives such as bananas, broccoli and avocado

A jacket potato has five-and-a-half times as much fibre as the average banana - and is packed with more Vitamin C than is found in three avocados, the Daily Express reported.

Last year a separate study discovered that eating spuds twice a day can lower blood pressure - and contrary to popular perceptions it won't make you put on weight.

Food for thought: Potatoes have five and a half times as much fibre as a banana

The new research also found that the potato contains more of the mineral selenium than the average child gets from all the seeds and nuts they consume.

The study was completed by the independent nutritionist Sigrid Gibson on behalf of the Potato Council.

They have produced a mobile phone app which compares how good potatoes are with the traditional superfoods.

Sian Porter, the Potato Council's consultant dietitian, told the Daily Express: 'It is important to have a wide variety of foods in your diet but sometimes our heads are turned by new things and we underestimate old favourites like potatoes and how they compare to other, often more expensive "superfoods".'

The researchers analysed the food intake of 876 children and 948 adults for the study.

Sigrid Gibson added: ' We think of bananas as being a good source of potassium, and they are, but potatoes make a more significant contribution to the diet.'

Excellent article, thanks for sharing!

And I totally agree. I've researched this as well and have found a lot of good things about potatoes. As a result, I eat them as my carb with dinner a lot. They're filling, they're rich in nutrients, and if you don't load them up with a lot of fatty extras they are great when trying to lose weight.

I love potatoes. Thank you for sharing this. I always felt guilty eating them, as they are pinned as just another starch!

Yes a lot of people seem to think that which is why I believe it is time the myth was debunked.

Potatoes also have one of the highest satiety levels of any food.

I've never eaten a raw potato (I think they are pretty undigestible) but I did have a boyfriend in high school that loved raw chips!

I've also read that if you roast white potatoes with olive oil it slows down your body's digestion of the potato. Reducing blood sugar spike. I am not a doctor this is just something I read online so don't flame me. One particularly awesome way to eat white potatoes is cubed with LOTS of garlic (talking a head of garlic), coat with olive oil, add some oregano and bake in the oven. Leave uncovered to get carmelization. FABULOUS. Greek potatoes as my mother would say. I suppose you could add carrots if you were so inclined.

I love potatoes but as a diabetic I can't eat them.. They are high in Carbs 36.6 grams of carbs and 2 grams of sugar, which isn't much sugar, but high carbs raise my blood sugars.. They also are 161 calories for 1 med potato which if you are counting calories, is high.. So I avoid them!! bread and potatoes have always been my fav foods to eat but haven't had either one since january and with proper diet and excercise I have come off 2 diabetic meds, I'm only on 1 now and that's been lowered and hope to come off next month..

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
