Pre-Op Diet And I'm So Hungry!

Recommended Posts

This is only day two of my pre-op diet and I'm so hungry and irritated. To add insult to injury I live with family members all of which love to eat and EAT GOOD! And I'm stuck drinking liquids for the next 8 days. My sister literally just made steak, eggs, rice with gravy and spinach. All those delicious smells served to drive me crazy. Ugh! but I kept it together. Instead of indulging I fixed a delicious Tomato based Soup with yummy veggies strained it and drank the broth. Although it was good, I'm still craving her meal. This is so very hard. My family is supportive as much as they can be but, they're not on a diet so they don't have to curtail what they eat, i do. But, seeing all that great food MAKES ME WANT IT EVEN MORE!

Any words of encouragement would be greatly appreciated....

If it is any consolation, it does get easier each day. Yes, food still smells great but as you start to see the scale going down that will release some of those endorphins to get you feeling good about what you are doing. If there is anyway for you to go for a walk or leave during their mealtime so it doesn't bother you as much, perhaps you could do that.

Good luck!

Its hard at the beggining but it will get better. Hang in there, you could do this. Also when this happens go for a walk or leave the house for a bit.

So I'm on 2nd day of pre op diet. My surgeon seems real strict. I have to do it for 3 weeks they make everyone do it. It's only 3 shakes a day and 64 oz Water. So I feel awful!!! I have the worst headache, sick to stomach and very dizzy. It's less than 450 calls a day. I work 10-12 hour days on my feet a s a hairstylist and i can't seem to focus. Does this seem extreme to anyone else???

I would go over the diet with the surgeon again- you want to make sure you are getting enough Protein in. Be honest and tell them you work 10-12 hour shift and you would like to add another Protein shake or something of the like in.

For me, the pre op and post op liquids were the hardest part of this process by far! I was constantly irritated, anxious, hungry or crying. LOL. What you are going through is normal. You may want to stay away from people at meal time. Go for walks, look at skinny clothes online, journal. Remind yourself it's only temporary, and soon you will on the road to meeting all your goals. If you have the self control to do this, you can do anything!

Go the distraction technique - avoid the situations that are making you think about foods, replace the food attraction with something else. This is just short term pain for long term gain. it's a time when you just have to suck it up and keep your eyes on the prize.

Thanks for the encouragement. But, I've failed. Each day since my post I have started each day on the right track but by the end of the day I fail. Idk, I need help, I have little to no discipline and I'm considering cancelling the surgery altogether.

Thanks for the encouragement. But, I've failed. Each day since my post I have started each day on the right track but by the end of the day I fail. Idk, I need help, I have little to no discipline and I'm considering cancelling the surgery altogether.

Don't cancel the surgery, I am right there with you. Each day I wake up with the biggest headache, I see food everywhere and my family continues to eat. These things are normal, you have to keep looking at the bigger picture. This is only temporary, it's a temporary hell, but only temporary. These two weeks will be nothing when you step on the scale in 6-8 months after the surgery and see that the weight of a todler has melted off you.

I am struggling as well, I sat in the kitchen with my Protein Shake while, Fried chicken, Mashed potatoes, corn bread and corn was being made...my favorite me meal... I had to leave the room. Don't cancel the surgery, you're stronger than that. Like most of us you have jumped through some hoops for this and to walk away from it now would have been all that work for nothing.

Oh, honey, right there with ya! Just remember, you're in it for the long haul. You will eat those foods again (albeit in much smaller quantities) but you will be doing it sanely and moderately, and not affecting your health adversely.

Hopefully you're doing better this week! <3

During my pre op diet sugar free Jello and sugar free popsicles saved me. Give those a try. I could have as much of those as I could stand along with 2 Protein Shakes and one meal of 4 oz. Protein 1/2 cup steamed veggies. I still have sugar free jello everyday and I'm 8 months post op.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
