April 2006 Bandits

Recommended Posts

I am now 2 weeks pre op and have done nothing but read all your posts! I feel so unprepared. My dr did not say anything about pre-op diet. In fact, i am his first ever lap band patient - how scary is that! I could not find anyone else in South Africa doing this procedure and he is the only one advertising it...was rather surprised to know i was going to be the guineepig... I do not yet have a dietician and i have not had any tests done. He said as i have no problems with heartburn, he is not going to worry about that. He just gave me a date - after deciding that yes, i am a candidate. This does not sound so cool now after reading what you all went through. I am a self-pay as well. I am really freaked out now...

He didn't ask for any tests? Any kind at all? I'm in Portugal and the doc here asked for blood test, liver sonogram, Xray of my thorax and an endoscopy. I just did the endoscopy and it looks like I may have an infection! If the doc didn't order those tests and he did the surgery there might have been some problems. I would make another appt with ur surgeon and ask him to send you for some of these tests.

Congratulations on the surgery...............you guys are being so good with all the info, whenever I go to the doctors I know all this stuff that they are telling me already, just from being on here.

Hi to AlisonB also, I'm sure Ceparano will have put you on the list already!!! I am starting to think I am lucky not to have had to have all these pre-tests!! Wow, imagine the psychology test for me hehehe!!!!! And I am glad I didn't have to do that bariatic thingy...............who went into surgery today? Oops I will have to go and check again!

Bye all

Amourette:clap2:

Thanks for the compliment Amourette but I am not the one who was kind enough to set up a list so we could see who our fellow pre-opers( is that a word?) are that were scheduled for surgery. It was a great idea and that list is getting longer everyday.

There are basic tests that MUST be done before banding. Endoscopy test to make sure that you don't have any underlying problems with your stomach, especially an infection there. You would never know it without the test. Gallbladder ultrasound to make sure you don't have any stones. Better to have them take it out at the same time as your banding then to require another surgery later. Blood work to make sure you don't have a metabolic problem which the band can't help. EKG test to make sure your heart is alright. So you see these tests are important your life is involved. Plus your surgeon has no learning curve, he is going to "practice" on you!!!!! PLEASE TRY TO FIND ANOTHER DOCTOR. At the very least, demand to have these tests done.

Hi Ceparano

I have just emailed my dr with all these queries and will await his reply. Yip - this does not sound right - no tests, no pre-op diet, no psyc, no dieticians (before op)!

Good luck and we will be waiting to hear back from you. Thanx for the list also, I wrongly gave credit for the list, so sorry for that.............

Alison, I don't know how much you should worry! I only had blood tests and am doing a pre-op diet and my doctor has a great reputation here in New Zealand. But then again I am 35, no big health problems (yet), ONLY have BMI of 37. I have had none of these tests the others talk about. I think if you are his first patient then you shouldn't have to pay, especially as you would be a walking advertisement for him getting more patients. He should be just glad of the credit! But major applause :clap2: to you for ringing him up and confronting him over these issues, I think some people in these forums (not ours of course!) would go 'oh well,it must be ok' 'cos they want the surgery so bad and don't want to jeopardise it!!

Let us know what happens!

Amourette aka Fiona

Hey Everybody!

Just got home and everything is going well. I was a bit dizzy and nauseated after surgery, but that was the worst of it. The care I received was wonderful. Don't be afraid. Trust that you have done your research and that your desire to be banded is to help yourself become healthier. And don't worry about being hungry, either. Yeah, a clear liquid diet is not so exciting, but you really aren't that hungry. I mixed hot Water with apple juice to make a warm diluted cider. It is yummy and filling! And in only four days I can add yogurt! Good luck to all the April Band(si)sters!

Hi everyone. I had my surgery on Thursday, April 6th in the late afternoon. Up to that time, I was so nervous and scared and couldn't think of much else but when Thursday came, I was very calm. No fear at that point because I knew it would go well and it did. I remember just being really hot and nauseus for a while but they gave me an ice pack and my mom and sister were there with cool towels until it passed. I left the hospital yesterday around 4:30 PM. I'm really sore but not unbearably so. Just took some liquid Tylenol because I don't like taking medication unless it's absolutely necessary. The pain is so much less than I thought it was going to be and have absolutely no gas pain at all. I just keep the heating pad on my stomach and it does help a great deal. I'm sleeping on the couch because I can get into bed, but have a hard time getting out. My mom is staying for a few days and has been a major help. I'm not hungry at all but I do make sure that I am getting my Protein Drinks, Soup, even hot chocolate that they gave me at the hospital when I left. I need to take in more Water though. I'm sure glad it is over but as I said it was no where near as bad and as scary as I thought it would be. Good luck to the rest of our April group!!! You'll do great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Waiting for surgery date…still undecided sleeve vs. RNY

      1. Jodi74

I had the sleeve 9/13/21 and just had a the sleeve to bypass revision on 5/3/23. My HW:321 (I'm 5' 8" tall)and I went down to 254 while doing my 7 nutrition appts required by my insurance company. So just changing the way I ate, I was able to get those pounds off w/o surgery. I have many Co morbidities mixed hyperlipidemia, diabetes, htn, MI due to covid. I had read and done quite a bit of research so I could choose the best surgery for myself and learned previous to my sleeve that someone as heavy as I was and all the Co morbidities I have, it was better in my situation to have the bypass but, my DR. Kept saying I would have the same results with the sleeve. Every time I would see him and say to him that I felt it would be best to just get the bypass, he just shot me down and said the sleeve would produce the same results! Why he kept asking me which surgery I wanted at each visit just to tell me the sleeve was all I needed still a mystery to me????? Let's just say, my Dr. Was wrong you see, the surgeries are both about the same price, but the sleeve is easier for the surgeon to perform so I think my DR. Just wanted the easier since he would get the same pay no matter what. After sleeve surgery I did go from 254 to 226 BUT that's just because you are healing from surgery and can't eat anyway as soon as I recovered! I was starving non-stop. I went right back up and stayed at 248. Still had to take cholesterol meds, blood pressure meds, diabetes meds etc. I'm now almost 4 weeks post op the bypass and feel great. I'm not starving all the time, went from 248 to 220 and doing great! Not only what you just read about my story, you also hear about a lot of people needing revision after the sleeve due to acid reflex like severe acid reflex all the time. So the bypass surgery is the only way to stop This reflux if you acquire this condition after sleeve surgery. The regain possibility is higher with sleeve than bypass so just think about all these factors before you make your decision. I wish I would have just had the bypass and saved myself from having to have 2 surgeries in under 2 years. The bypass surgery was also less painful for me lol! I don't know if the new surgeon was better or what but, I was home the next day. After the sleeve I had to stay an extra night due to the nausea and vomiting all night and for pain control.

Who knew Filet Mignon would make me so sick. Leftovers from Mother's Day.  On the upside..next day I started walking outside a little over a mile without stopping or back pain. That's a bit deal for me considering how inactive I've been for years. Woot woot!

Five-week follow-up for gastric bypass and now on lifetime food plan. No restrictions.  In all that time I was fortunate to get sick only one time, week 1, on Easter. Chicken broth...go figure.
