Ready To Give Up

I usually eat a zone bar for Breakfast - chocolate mint is my fav. Sometimes I have Greek yogurt, or egg beaters with reduced fat cheese and salsa. The egg beaters are what fills me up the best.

lunch is fat free cottage cheese with salsa, or fat free salad dressing or Greek yogurt.

dinner is chicken breast, pork chop, lean burger, tilapia. I almost always have a salad with fat free Salad Dressing and veggie of some kind with it.

I've also found that Breakfast is really key for me. If I am satisfied after breakfast, the rest of the day is much easier, and I can eat less. If I'm hungry after eating breakfast, the rest of the day is going to be a real challenge.

See, that's where i have problems. My nutritionist says not to eat greek yogurt or cottage cheese or ricotta for meals because those are soft Proteins and they will go through the band quickly and not keep me full. For meals, she wants me to have solid Proteins. I can have the yogurt or cottage cheese for snack. That's why i struggle with lunches.

Having said that, i think i'm going to check out the Protein bars. I am not hungry in the mornings at all and find myself tighter then than during the rest of the day. It would alleviate the lunch struggles cuz then i would have the eggs on toast with veggies. Do you find yourself hungry between having a Protein Bar and lunch?

OK, what is PB mean? just to set the record strainght...I am not a "rigid" protiein first person..I slip alot.. I think when I do my best is when I finally let go of what I was suppossed to do and listened to my body. If I want a piece of pie , I have a small piece..If I want a hamburger patty with bar b que sauce then I just have a patty and eat half when I feel like it. My husband has been great and has adapted to my way of eating.. I fix a "whole" meal in the evening and only eat what I really want and in small portions otherwise I am running to the bathroom after a few bites.. I keep thinking I need another fill and then I have a day when I cannot eat without getting sick and I realize I am not eating properly..usually too much yogurt, mashed pot, softer foods..I have to chew my Proteins very, very well before I swollow or as you all know, it can get pretty painful.

When I go out to eat, I eat an appetizer and maybe Soup (Ii have them deliver it with everyone else's dinner) OR 1/2 of an entree..no way could I fit more than that in my stomach. I think that is normal, isn't it. Hopefully Need2lose2 these comments will help you..I know reading everyone else's helps me since I haven't been able to talk to anyone else who has had this surgery..thanks all...Cindy

I'm not usually hungry after having a zone bar for breakfast. Have you tried the Greek yogurt and cottage cheese? If it keeps you satisfied and losing weight - I think I'd go with what works for you, nit what works for your nut. I don't see a nut, only my surgeon, and as long as I lose weight when I see him he's happy. I bring him my food logs, and the only thing he's ever gotten upset with are liquid calories.

And on is a productive burp, when something gets stuck and you need to bring it up.

You know, i think both of you are right. When i'm given restrictive food choices and i don't like my choices, i tend to retreat and do the opposite. I've always been much happier when i didn't have to constantly think about or plan my foods.

The way you described how you eat, cindy, is what i heard about having the band is like and it's precisely why i chose it. Thank you for setting it straight for me.

pugsx3, i will do just that. I will see how the greek yogurt does and how the cottage cheese with fruit does. I'd be happier with those than a salad with Beans. The nut gave me the guidelines cuz i was gaining weight and not losing at all. I'm at a weight right now that was more than i was before surgery. The nut thinks that by giving me a restrictive food list as well as menu, i should start losing weight, but it only made/makes me miserable!!!

Will hopefully get out tonite to try out some Protein Bars and stock up on greek yogurt! :)

You can do this - you just have to figure out what works for you. All of the surgeons have different rules, and bottom line is we're all different too. Yes, the surgeons have the medical education and knowledge that we don't have, but we know ourselves better then they do. I would never recommend completely disregarding medical advice, but they need to incorporate our feedback in their treatment plan as well. We have to be able to stand up and say when something is not working! I guess I'm pretty lucky - I really like my surgeon, and he really does listen to what I have to say.

Thank you pugsx3. I'm feeling much better.

If i was losing weight, all this wouldn't be an issue and i'd just be doing what works for me. It's because i was gaining weight that i had to see the nutritionist to get an eating plan in order. I just don't do well with strict menus. If i did, i wouldn't need the band. kwim?

I have a few Balance Protein bars and will test out each of those flavors. The store didn't have any Zone bars so i'll check another store a different time.

I was banded Sept 19' date=' 2011. While i lost some weight postop, i gained it all back when i started eating. I am currently at 8.5cc in an 11cc band. After 7-1/2 months i've not lost much (really, it's insignificant). I've tried so hard to follow protocol and the menu my nutritionist gave me but it's very hard. I was never much of a Protein eater and when i eat a meal with no carbs, i feel very depressed and i find myself looking for food.

I know planning my meals is the key but it's hard enough to cook and plan meals for the family, so often times i'm not getting my alotted Protein and am looking for the carbs.

I'm also having a problem finding that balance between being hungry and eating too much that it causes me to vomit. This usually happens during dinner. (not every though)

What's even more frustrating and confusing is that i feel restriction when eating solid protein....healthy foods, but when it comes to certain carbs (ones not allowed to have), well, let's just say i can get through an entire bag of cheddar flavored rice cake minis with no problems whatsoever.

Sometimes i'm ready to give up.[/quote']

Don't do it ! Never give up! Tell me about you family . Jubee

I get zone bars almost anywhere - Jewel, Dominick's, Meijer, even Walgreens and CVS have them! I was looking for them at costco yesterday and couldn't find them, cause I thought I'd seen them in the sale flyer. I'll have to check again next week.

The Balance bars (omg, the mint chocolate is DIVINE) are on sale at Shoprite this week (5 for $5).

I think i'm going to call for another fill appt. While i've done better with my eating, i still feel like i could eat more after having my alloted portions....

The one good thing that i have been doing is exercising. I do a toning workout dvd in the mornings and then my hubby and i walk at night. I'm hoping that at least some of the extra calories i eat will be burned off from exercise but i do lead a somewhat sedentary life the rest of the time.

You hear most studies on weight loss surgeries conclude that people generally lose 40% of the weight they need to. I think its because (for me) I've lost about 80# give or take really without doing much at all. I of course eat less (volume) and a little healthier than I used to and find myself kinda plateauing. For me this is the point in which my band stops doing it all for me. I've been luckier than most because 80# without really changing much is great for me. I know its now up to me to find the time and motivation to help my band help me.

My point with all this is, dont sweat it! The worst thing you can do is come on here and compare your success or percieved failure to others. Everyone is different and every situation is different. You have ups and downs with everything you do, this is no different. The nice thing about my situation is I've lost 80#, havent really been serious lately but I havent gained any, any weight back! In the past I would have gained more than I lost! The nice thing is, with the band you can get re-adjusted and get back on track without much guilt. If you choose to follow "drs. orders" you'll lose much faster but be realistic, if you could follow drs. orders you wouldnt have the surgery! The mental part is alot harder than the surgery and unfortunately there's no "band" for your brain!

I've found what works for me is to incorporate healthier choices into my diet, etc. slowly. In the past my idea of trying to lose was to be all gung ho, change everything at once but I was lucky to lose at all because I've never lasted very long that way.

My dr. recomended protien bars. My issue was I wouldnt eat much during the day so I would make up for it with late lunch, dinner and into the evening. The protien early helps curb my appetite in the evening although my brain wants fed because thats what its used to!

Its not easy, if it was everyone would be skinny. Dont give up, you've made a great sacrifice for yourself mostly and also your family. Find what works for you and you'll be happy. The true test is not how much you lose in 1-2 years, its how much you lose over the long haul. How much healthier you become.

My goal with doing this surgery was to become a healthier person which I have definitely done. My dream was and still is to look good. I look better but still have a ways to go. If I do get there great, if I dont, Im much healthier and happier already!

PB= productive burp. it's when something gets struck usually it comes with slime and it can make you vomite. But usually it just brings up your last bite. It's quite nasty.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
