Hypothyroidism & Lapband

Recommended Posts

I know more than I've ever wanted to know about a thyroid from the last 7 years of my issues with it! Even with it gone its still a tricky little thing!! :)

Mine is genetic, so I was bound to get it sooner or later. Funny thing is, I have heard some people say it can be a reason for no weight loss on traditional diets and others scoff at the idea that it could stop loss. Frankly, the research points to the former and so it's a little frustrating having a person WITHOUT a thyroid condition telling you that's not a contributing reason for why you never succeeded with traditional dieting.

I also have hypo. I had to get a letter from both my endocrinologist and gp for ins company and bariatric surgeon. Letter from endocrinologist stated he supported my decision of getting lapband, my thyroid issue was under control and that he would continue to follow me after my surgery. I am on a very small dose and just recently started taking it correctly. (1/2 hour before eating or drinking anything) and it is amazing how much better I feel. I never ate with it but I would take it with my coffee with Creamer. Haha.

For the people who have hypo what were your numbers before meds if you don't mind. Just want to know where I fall. I'm like right I'm te edge but since there is such a huge "normal" range I'm curious. I hope this all make me feel better bc right now I feel like crap. Taking my first rx sleep pill even though I've had insomnia all my life. Taking my first thyroid med tomorrow and I got an X-ray of my back and might have to start pain injections. It's nice to start gettin answers about my health and start doing something about it

You know, it is all about how you feel. TSH also might not be the best check. I am pleased that they are doing more checks on it even though you are within normal ranges. Some docs would just say, ok, you are normal. They can check Free T3 and Free T4 to see exactly how much thyroid hormone you have, and how well you are converting from T3 to T4 (I think that is the direction it goes). It's been a while since I went through treatment for my condition.

You can feel a wide range of difference within the normal range. Before I went through radiation treatment, I made my endocrinologist promise to keep me in the higher range of normal, just because I feel better there. Small changes in dosage can make a huge difference.

Ask to see an endocrinologist to fine tune your dosage and check on the full functioning of your thyroid. TSH checks the pituitary gland's level of asking for thyroid hormone. it's a good check, but there can be other issues. A full thyroid panel can give a better picture.

That is exactly what my gp said. I was in the normal range but I was normal low. I don't recall my numbers in the beginning but now I am 3.56 for tush and .73 t4. I insisted on being followed up because there is thyroid disease in my family. I was tired, could sleep for days, my hair was falling out. Couldnt lose weight no matter what I did. He referred me to the endocrinologist and he checked both my t3 and t4 and what do you know... It wasn't working properly. I am on only .5 mg and .75mg now and when taken in the morning before my coffee I discovered I feel a huge difference! Good luck!

My t4 was out of whack as well but I don't remember the number but my TSH is 4.98. My doc put me on 50mg levothyroxine. Today was my first day on it so I'll he interested to see what happens. Im tired alllllll the time but I also had a sleep study that said i have insomnia and out of 6 hr of sleep I only 38 mins of deep sleep. No wonder I'm so exhausted and with hypothyroidism I can't believe I can make it through the day.

I am on the lowest dose possible of levothyroxine right now. I have a family history of hypothyroid, so when my numbers went off my PC immediately put me on meds. I am glad it's under control.

It may take a while before you feel any difference, but here's hoping it makes you feel wonderful!

My thyroid blanked out on me while I was pregnant and we didn't catch it until 2 years later. I remember the end of the day feeling bone-crushingly tired. My levels have been played with and my old doctor (insert bad words here) would never listen to me. My new doctor is the best, she is young and willing to listen and help me however she can. She got my levels up to high end of normal, and she told me that she really wants me to pursue lap band because it will be hard for me to loose it on my own. She whipped up my referral right quick as soon as I said I think that's the way I should go. So far no one has said anything to me about my hypo being a problem as far as WLS is concerned. The main concern is scar tissue from 2 c-sections and a gallbladder removal and the fact that my BMI is so high that any surgery is a risk.

Thyroid here, Unless you have to have surgery or having huge problems, lapband is fine... just need your doctors ok for it..

I'm just one person, but I have Hashimoto's Thyroiditis (hypo) and I had lapband done in Feb 2011. I had a personal trainer I worked out with for 6 months and worked out at Lifetime Fitness with him twice, sometimes three times a week, and worked out at home also. I bought a Polar to monitor my progress. I started jogging along with my walking regimen.

lost 30 lbs--that's it. No more. Not one ounce, not one gram. It is September of 2012 now, and I'm still sitting at 30 pounds down.

I went through intense feelings of guilt, disappointment, every negative you can think of, that was me. It still is to some degree. I am now coming out of my funk, well over a year later, and realizing that I have to live my life anyway, that I might just be fat the rest of my life; but I don't have to be out of breath all the time, and I don't have to be tired all the time, so the working out has started up again.

Just be prepared, and be informed. Good luck.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
