Preop Diet. No Weight Loss.

I have been on the preop diet. I have had a lot of protien and lots of shakes. I have not lost weight and my surgery is Wed. Is that normal? I am so worried about my liver not being right. Anyone else go through this? I have had a few bites here and there of stuff but not much more.

But what do you mean by lots of protein drinks? Maybe you're drinking more in a day then your supposed to. Just sayin we dont know if you dont tell us exactly what you have been eating.

Also are you consuming the right number of calories?

how long were you on the pre op diet?

What was your original instructions from your doctor? I was only allowed to do the Medifast shakes -- no solid foods at all. I think some people combine shakes + 1 small meal a day. Are you overeating? Consuming too many calories, too big of portions? Are you drinking more shakes than you were prescribed?

I had four optifast shakes and two bars a day then cleatr liquids for two days. I had lost15lbs as of my surgery yesterday.

I was on a optifast diet prior to surgery and I was told I would lose between 15 - 20 pounds in those two weeks.. I only lost 8, I was so upset, but have learned everyone is different and everyones body is going to lose their wt different then others, so don't worry about it.. It will come off at some point as long as you are following their advice...

Wishing you the best..

I have been eating beans or spinach and the Dr said the whey shakes are fine. I had two a day. I ate small portions of everything. I ate three bites of lasanga in the past week. My from did not put me on a liquid diet.... nothing to eat or drink after midnight.

Beans are also considered simialar to a charbohydrate. They have protient but also carbs. As long as your liver has decreased in size, that is all they needed. Every Dr does a different pre-opt diet. It is mainly to reduce the liver so it is not in the way for surgery. Weight loss is a benifit.....

Best wishes for you for surgery!

I just saw my Surgeon this morning and he told me going forward 2 meals should be 8oz whey protein shakes and then the other meal something small with veggies or salad. My surgery is next Monday.

Anume -- You can survive anything for 10 days! It'll be challenging, but at least there's an end date in sight. The surgery is so worth it in the end! Every time it becomes a challenge, just remember all the reasons why you want to go through with this. Write those reasons down and carry with them in your pocket if you need a reminder.

I was just talkig to my mom about this same problem. I have been on the pre op diet for 7 days and have lost 5 lbs. Those 5 lbs just happen to be the same 5 that i gained after my last weigh in at the dr. I am afraid they are going to think that I have not been doing what I am supposed to. I am allowed 4 protein shakes a day and a 3 oz piece of meat and 2 cups of raw veggies. I have been having 1 to 2 shakes a day and my meal. I am dont know if they are looking for me to lose weight or to shrink my liver, how they will know if it shrinks it totally beyond me since they have never seen it before but who knows. I was going to call my dr office tomorrow and talk to them about it but they are closed so I decided to get on here and see what everyone else had to say.
