Has Anyone Had An At Home Sleep Study?

Recommended Posts

The equipment should be arriving today for me to do my at home sleep study tonight and tomorrow. I'm a little apprehensive for two reasons:

1) I'm a side sleeper who tends to move around a lot in my sleep. My friend who had a sleep study done in a sleep center said she had to lie flat on her back and they told her to try not to move around too much. I'm afraid that if I'm not able to get comfortable, I won't sleep well...therefore the sleep study won't work.

2) I usually get up at least once during the night to use the bathroom. I'm not sure how that will work with doing a sleep study.

If anyone has any experience/stories/suggestions/etc. involving an at home sleep study....I'd greatly appreciate them. Thanks!

I had a sleep study done last Saturday at a sleep center. The tech said I could lay anyway I want as long as I was comfortable, he didn't mention anything about laying on my back. I only slept for 2 hours if I was lucky and they got all the info they needed by the time the study was done.

I usually go to the bathroom a couple times a night as well. I have never seen the home study machines, but in the center the tech came in and unplugged the box with all the wires from another box, and I had to carry one of the boxes with me. When I was done he just hooped the boxes back together..was not too much of a hassle. Getting comfortable.....that's a different story...

I have had a sleep study in a clinic and also at home for two nights.

At the overnight clinic in did take me a while to fall asleep as you are hooked up to a lot of cords and I had to sleep on my back (I am a stomach sleeper).

I did eventually fall asleep. One helpful tip, the day of your sleep study, make yourself tired! Clean the house, exercise and no naps. I received that advise and I think it helped. By the time I got there, I was tired and ready to sleep!

My at home sleep study was for two nights. The hardest part was putting on the electrodes because it is time consuming, about 15-20 min.

I had no problem falling asleep at home. Waking up to use the bathroom was no problem.

I think these things intimidate us just because it is something new. You will probably do just fine! Let us know how it goes and Good Luck!

I think the reason they prefer you to sleep on your back is because you are more likely to have apnea episodes in that position. I have had 3 studies before. Fell asleep within 5 minutes each time, which I would have guessed longer! I am off of my cpap machine, but I still take medicine for my legs.

I really wouldn't worry too much about how you sleep. Remember, this is to get an accurate representation of your breathing while you sleep...so sleeping as you normally do will the be most indicative of a potential problem! I know sleeping on your back is definitely more prone to having apneas, but I never sleep on my back, so why start now?

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...
