To fill or not to fill

Recommended Posts

Ugh. I am so frustrated. Banded 9/22. Starting weight 230. Today 189. I got down to 186 but the darn scale is going into the opposite direction!

I have not had a fill. Last month I lost 10 pounds and declined a fill. I go back in dec 5th and if this continues i know dr will want to give me a fill. I dont know if i need one though. Honestly, i havent been making the best food choices -- too many carbs, ritz crackers, chips. A fill is not gonna fix this. I can still only eat a small amount 1/2 c. But i have gotten lax about measuring and 1/2 c will keep me full for 4-5 hours.

I am just totally frustrated yet i feel like im not giving it 100%. Maybe 90. So far this has been easy. Honestly. But this month (nov) has been though.

Thanks for letting me vent.

It sounds like you're struggling and many of us go through this. The foods yu mention are actually considered slider foods which "could" be an indication that you are too tight.

Are you eating chips and crackers because they are easier to eat, or because you prefer them?

Try doing the 5 day pouch test...not to test your pouch, rather to put your head back in the bandster mindset.

You've had great losses so far...don't stop yourself short now. You CAN do this!

Doesn't sound like you need a fill. You are staying full for 4-5 hours on a 1/2c food- that sounds perfect. I think you are right about the carbs- I would cut out the crackers et.. I bet you will see that scale move. You can do it!

Hi ,I just got banded on the 9th. I have 2 questions. Do you have any restriction before your first fill? and what is the 5 day pouch test?

I'm with Shirley Jean - I am confused just a bit. I was banded on the 8th Nov. My first fill is scheduled for 12/27 and would like to know what I should or could be doing until then food/diet wise. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Those of us banded recently are still in the recovery phase. I had learned that even though I can eat something, that does not mean I should. Try to stay with well cooked foods and make chicken or fish your best friend. Once the swelling goes down the stoma is large, not as large as before, but bigger than it will be. After our first fill, I'm probably looking at Dec 21st, we begin a new starting with full liquids and working back up. During this time we need to use a little willpower to make the right choices. My biggest things are red meat, cream sauces and breads. I limit carbs as before, just not so strictly.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
