Any advise on getting through pre-op diet?

Recommended Posts

Just started my 2 week pre-op diet yesterday and am starving. I can have 2 Protein Shakes a day, 1 cup of broth based Soup or low-fat cottage cheese and one snack (low fat and sugar free) of either pudding, yogurt, or Jello. Other than that I can have all the Decaf tea/coffee I want with sugar substitute and non-fat Creamer. I've tried taking some Fiber pills to help with the hunger, but it's not working very well. I'm noticing that I'm angrier and more irritable. I'm trying to focus on why I'm doing this and that it's only temporary, but there are times when I REALLY want to eat just a little something more to keep my stomach from hurting due to hunger. Any other ideas on what I can do to help me get through this? Thanks :)

I guess you don't have to be told that is a rough period. You could try sugar free Popsicles,

Greek yogurt, sugar free fudgescicles and my favorite, costco chicken broth : > ).

I wish there was something I could say that would make it easier, but there isn't.

Maybe someone will come along with some better ideas, until then, best of luck.

I added a tbsp of LF Peanut Butter to my Protein Shakes when I was really hungry. It boosted the Protein and somehow made them more satisfying. But unfortunately, as Corrigan said, this is the rough time. Just keep thinking, it is for a limited time and it will get better. I think the 2 week pre-diet helps really prepare you for the post surgery.

Thankfully my pre-op diet is only a week and more liberal in the offerings: 5-6 Bariatric Advantage shakes with fruit blended in and one meal 300/cal; weight watchers, healthy choice etc. Is yours more restrictive because your doctor is trying to get you to lose prior to surgery or to gage your sucess with the band?

Have no idea. Dr. told me the diet is to shrink my liver, but didn't say that I had to loose weight or demonstrate committment. I know one other person who just had surgery with same Dr. and her diet was same as mine, but we also had same BMI - so it could be with higher BMI the diet becomes more restrictive. Today has been a better day so far. It helped that I was able to sleep in today so I wasn't hungry this morning. It also helped to be able to blend the shake with ice and a little fruit or 2T of almond butter. Got on the scale this morning and already lost 13lbs. I'm sure it's mostly Water weight though. Anyway, I'm a little more hopefull and less irritated today.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
