Paleo Diet for Bandsters

Recommended Posts

Hey guys! I'm need to this diet plan idea but really open to learning more healthier ways to eat. I've been banded 4 years. I was doing great for the first 2 years, even though it was a very slow weight loss. I started having complications right before year 3, so at that point I was done with the band. Not being able to swallow your own saliva without throwing up was too much for me to handle. They took out a lot of Fluid. My weight slowly started creeping back up. Before my 4 year anniversary, I decided that I wanted to see if I could rediscover the love. I'm only 6.3cc in my 10cc band. I've never been tighter than than 6.8.

Last year, I did South Beach, and lost good. But that was before the holidays. Then, my mom was diagnosed with cancer and died. So last year was awful for me. I still have a lot going on, but I've been trying so hard to get my eating under control. I believe that low to no carbs, healthy diet works. But my emotional side craves Snacks and ice cream. This year is off to a great start, hadn't had many carbs. I have to not touch the bread when I go out to dinner. I don't know what has come over me this weekend. Nothing I ordered had carbs in it, but I ate the bread on the table. Dumb.

Well anyways, I've said all this to raise the question is this diet similar to South Beach? I am allowed the artificial powders and sweets. I'm not really feeling the fake sweets so I rarely eat them. But I do like pudding. Maybe because it reminds me of ice cream :-)

Ok, still a long message. Sorry in advance. I guess I'm having a moment. I need help. I want to eat right and health. I've been exercise 6 days a week. Started week before last :-) had my first trainer consultation, and I start this Tuesday. I need help with the eating. I know carbs are the devil and I need your (all of those that want to help and support). I need to master this eating thing.

Thanks in advance. (Sorry again for thr long message)

I have trouble going as extreme as what I find Paleo to be, but I do eat as clean as possible. It fits my lifestyle of being a .heavy lifter. I am able to build the muscle that I want and while still keeping a lean look.

I do not eat processed food. I do take in a lot of Protein and veggies through the day. It is a lot easier to do in the summer though, when all the fruits and veggies are in season!

I love hearing about how others stick to their new healthy lifestyle!!

Have you watched the documentary on NetFlix entitled, "Forks Over Knives"? This plan in the video is described by doctor's who manage patients with some serious health issue which all seem to disappear when they adopt and follow a "whole foods, plant-based diet".

My primary care physician asked me to watch it when I told her I was considering lap band surgery.

Hello aloudwhisper,

A Paleo diet cosists of meat, seafood, eggs, vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, butter/ghee, olive oil, and coconut oil.

You are not supposed to eat grains, legumes, dairy, processed food, alcohol, and starches (including potatoes other than sweet potatoes).

Sugar-substitutes, honey, agave nectar and the like are a gray area. I personally think they are bad for us and keep us eating dessert-like foods which is a psychological habit we need to break. I am trying to break the dessert habit now, but I find that instead of icecream, I'll go for nut butter, dates, or oranges. Grrr...it is a hard habit to break.

Some people who eat Paleo limit their carbs from fruit and sweet potato, and other watch fats and limit nuts/coconut products. Others don't worry about carbs or fats.

Thanks so much Hillary. I will look into this. I really need a better way if eating. I start off good, but often fall off the wagon. I honestly don't like the idea of never having pralines and cream ice cream every couple of months, but right now my focus is all about getting off this weight.

Aloudwhisper,

Please don't think I know it all. I certainly don't. There are people on this website that have had great success with losing weight. I am not one of them. Even with the band I yo-yo. Weight lost, then gained, then lost, then gained. My paleo diet experiences are experimental. I actually lost weight the fastest when I was on a vegan diet. But, my triglycerides, cholesterol, and blood sugar were really out of whack. I don't have blood sugar crashes on the Paleo diet. I've also managed to cut my triglycerides in half. But, my doctor did put me on Lipitor now, despite these changes. She says I only have to stay on it for a few months, until my cholesterol comes down. In two weeks on a clean Paleo diet, I've lost about 3.5 lbs, which is okay. I think if I exercised more, cut my carbs lower, or cut my fats that I could lose weight faster.

Anyway, I would recommend the books:

Why We Get Fat by Gary Taubes

Wheat Belly by William Davis

The Paleo Solution by Robb Wolf

The Primal Blueprint by Mark Sisson

It Starts with food by Dallas And Melissa Hartwig

Best, Hilary

Have you ever tried South Beach? This sounds somewhat similar.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
