Just wondering if any of you guys have been practicing MMA and if it's gotten easier since your surgery. Looking forward to practicing Jiu Jitsu without struggling.

Okay, I know this is in the mens room and you are wondering from the guys, but I am big into the UFC stuff - especially since females have been allowed in. My gym actually does a MMA class that myself and my trainer (who I've been blessed to have become like a sister to me) have been participating in for the last 1-2 months.

Saturday was the first time I full on sparred with my trainer, and I had no issues (minus the fact that she fatigued my arms to the point I couldn't push her off of me when she had me in a head lock lol)

Anyways, I don't know how much is related to the lap band because I have become a religious gym rat (I go to the gym about 12 hours a week) so a portion of it is my endurance that's built up, however the band has helped me drop the weight I needed to along with myself kicking my own butt at the gym in order to be able to participate in a class like that.

I have yet to see any side effects, I know a lot of folks question being hit in the port etc - I haven't had any issues.

I'm interested to see what everyone's experience is with contact sports. I'm considering the LB surgery and concerned about contact. I'm 20 years in karate and the last five in MMA and jiu Jitsu.

I've never minded getting hit, but I don't know about getting hit with the port. I may see if I can get a shirt made with padding or padding in my kimono.

Anyone with the surgery - how is the port? I know it can stick out and it probably will for me.

I can't give up the karate, MMA, and Bjj. It's a catch 22 though. Can't keep going unless I lose weight. My knees and hips are failing because I'm too heavy.

Any thoughts are appreciated! Thank you!

I think it should be fine, my Dr says you can't break the port. I play hockey, asked my Dr what would happen if I get hit or if my port gets hit by a puck and he said it would not harm it. I'll be playing in my first post op game this weekend!

I take 3 MMA classes in which we do a lot of free rolling in BJJ and a lot of contact with muai Thai - I have yet to have any issues other than the port area is slightly tender than other areas- but have taken numerous push kicks directly to port with no issue

Thanks guys. That makes me feel better. I really can't get banded if I can't choke people a few times a week! I feel better. Don't think I want the sleeve. Little too radical.

Vinny - are you in NJ? Where do you train? I'm in NJ also.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
