Hey everyone...I'm very excited that I'm starting this journey. It's a long time coming for me and it's high time I started making myself my priority! I am however a little anxious about some of the things I'm hearing from others who have decided to go with bypass instead of band. One woman told me she did some research and found that there is a substantial failure rate after 10+ years. Anyone else hearing that? Not sure what the reason for failure would be...possibly non compliance? Not getting fills? Thoughts anyone?

I don't have a date yet. Registering for Nurtritian class & psycological eval this Thurs. Have appts set w/ Pulmonary & Cardio but not until August. Barium swallow tomorrow. I'm hoping for Sept or Oct. Who is your surgeon? Do you go to any local support groups? It's nice to find people that live near by who are going thru this also. It makes it a little easier and more real. Have you met anyone who's band failed? I'm a little scared about that. I just keep telling myself if I do what i'm suppose to it will be ok. ;) Keep in touch and good luck with your next fill!

Hi I am from Woodbury, NJ..I was banded on April 18, 2011. I went to Pennsylvania Hospital. I actually just had a fill today it was my 2nd. I have lost 37 lbs since I started this journey in December 2010. As long as you remember that the band is only a tool and not a cure all and your willing to accept that it will be 90% you 10%band that will get you to your goal then you will be successful. Please keep in touch it's nice to get to know bandsters in our area. Good luck with your journey.

I'm seeing Dr Goldstein. Do you go to the VIrtua support groups or does Dr Neff have his own groups? He was at the seminar my husband went to the other night. And he seemed very nice. I think the Virtua groups are held in Voorhees on some Mon / Thurs.

Hi Peaches:

I'm from the Blackwood/Clementon area. Know Voorhess very well. I relocated to Winston Salem, NC. When I left NJ almost 4 years ago, there was only one doc doing the surgery. Who are you going with now and what hospital is he/she located at? I'm being banded on Wednesday and very excited about it.. I was supposed to have gastric bypass in 2004, but a health issue prevented me from having that surgery and the lapband wasn't covered by insurance at that time. So to finally have this thing come true is a real dream for me. I wish you the best of luck and please stay in touch and let me know how you are making out. I will request you as a friend.

K

dr neff is thru kennedy I looked up docs in the area and then called and went to there meetings to hear about them and there staff. Dr neff was the only doc that i had a consult with that does his own fills and every appt you see him. I liked that . i didnt go to meet with dr goldstein only because i didnt want to use virtua ( my x's wife and family work there) ;) didnt want any problems....

I dont know how your doc does things but some questions are

1) does he do before liquid diet, if so how long

2) what type of band is he using and how much does it hold

3) does he start out with Fluid in the band and if so how much?

4) when does he do your first real fill?

these are just some questions i found over the site and I used when i met with the doc so i knew... belive it or not i started with 1/2 cc in my band after surgery and lost quicker then some who went thru band hell.... that when after the surg you have no restriction because the doc wants you to heal up and so your just the same as you were before the surgery ... if you know in advance you can trick your brain !

The study you're referring to about people with 10+ years having issues was based on a large group of patients from the 90's from one hospital in Belgium, I believe it was. Lap band surgery wasn't even approved in the U.S. then. results are much different now. Like others above, I know people who have had both gastric bypass and lap band. the bandeds are faring far better!

and me... grew up in NJ... Roselle.. near Elizabeth and Newark... nestled in the refineries, where you can smell home before you see it... can't say I miss it all that much anymore, but there are some parts that are hard to come by anywhere else, for sure... oh, and I just got banded and am VERY happy that I did! Good luck and keep the faith!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
