So, one month post-op, still on mushies. I am looking for some more variety in my diet; and I really want to eat some oatmeal. However, I am concerned because a) I am worried it will stick, and b ) I am unsure about how to flavor it and don't want to make it calorie heavy. I was thinking of just adding a scoop of my vanilla flavored Protein powder and some stevia or agave nectar to it.

What do you folks think? I miss oatmeal...

Thanks!

I wouldn't worry about it getting stuck. Just don't make it too thick. For flavor, try stirring in some applesauce and cinnamon. Great job on the weight loss....You're off to a good start! Congrats!!

How about the flavored packets, do you like them? Thats what I eat, and keep it kind of thin. Also take small bites, and chew until you see how it's feeling for you.

I was told I could have thinned out oatmeal on week 2 (which is at the end of my week 1) of my post-op diet. I ate a little of it on 9 days post-op and did fine. :)

I've had oatmeal twice now and both times I made it a little thinner than I would normally eat it but not quite runny.....

Yes, add your Protein powder to it and you can also add some of the SF syrups like caramel or vanilla to it to boost the flavor, as well as applesauce, cinnamon, etc. Both times I had the sugar free oatmeal, I added about a tsp of brown sugar just to bump up the taste, but normally I'd add about 1/4 cup!! LOL so I've made progress!! I've even considered adding a tiny bit of SF maple Syrup.< /span>

great, now I'm wanting oatmeal!!! Peer pressure!!! LOL

I don't use instant oatmeal any longer.. the sugars in those are too high, and they don't keep me full very long. What I like now is Steelcut Oatmeal. it's lower glycemic and keeps me full a long time.

If you're concerned about it getting stuck, just thin it out a bit with some Water or skim milk (or soy or rice or almond milk.. whatever floats your boat).

I flavor mine with 1/2 of a chopped apple or a small container of s/f applesauce. 1 tbspn chopped walnuts, cinnamon & 1 Tbspn of f/f half/half. Then a packet of stevia or splenda if the apple hasn't made it sweet enough. You can certainly add Protein powder if you wish. I've heard some nutritionists recommend adding some eggwhite (2 Tbspns) and microwaving it. The egg white increases the Protein and isn't supposed to change the taste. I tried that.. didn't care for it. It wasn't bad.. I just didn't like the change in texture.

I make my steelcut oatmeal overnight in my crockpot.. it's super easy and you don't have a bit mess to clean.. only your bowl. Take a bowl that will fit inside your crockpot. Spray with nonstick cooking spray (not required, just makes cleanup a bit easier). Add 1/4 cup steelcut oatmeal. Add 1 cup Water. Place bowl with oatmeal/water mix in the crockpot, put lid on, turn on low and walk away for 8 hours. It cooks itself. enjoy!!

thanks for the idea...i am going to try this with me crock pot tonight...i have been having the instant ones since i started mushies yesterday, but it doesn't keep me full, and i can understand why the steelcut "real" oatmeal would be better...it will be fun to experiment with it to by adding protein powder and applesauce...if you have any other ideas for flavoring, please let us know!

What is steelcut oatmeal?

It's oatmeal that is less processed and therefore it takes longer to digest and keeps us full longer.

You can find it at many grocery stores, just have to look for it.

The brand I prefer is Bob's Red Mill (it won best oatmeal in Scotland!!, the home of oatmeal..lol) , but Quaker also makes a steelcut, and I found yet another brand at Walmart.< /p>

Thanks everyone for responding!! I really appreciate it. I'm going to try it tomorrow morning. And I quoted this reply, because putting SF Caramel Syrup in it sounds heavenly good right now... wow!

I'm going to use this method. Steelcut Oatmeal is what I like, I don't like instant Oatmeal. This sounds like a great way to do it! THANK YOU!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
