6 week liquid diet?!?!?!?!?!!?

Recommended Posts

I just found out that once all my insurance is approved and they are ready to schedule me for surgery, I will have a 2 week pre-op liquid diet and then a 4 week post op liquid diet. I don't know if I can handle nothing but liquids for 6 weeks. It seems like most everyone else has about 4 weeks of liquid.

Has anyone else had to go through 6 weeks of liquids? And HOW did you do it? Yikes!

Thanks

I had two weeks prior, two weeks after, then a week of liquids (not clear), a week of mushies, a week of soft. I imagine your Dr will have you on something similar and not a full four weeks of Clear Liquids after surgery. However, the first 4-6 weeks after surgery are for healing. Keep that in mind.

You will be very surprised by how you feel about solids after surgery. I was on clear liquids in the hospital and full liquids for 2 weeks, my doc likes Carnation Instant Breakfast, now called Breakfast Essentials and Slim-Fast High Protein. It was work trying to get in the amount I needed daily because I was full so easily. Before surgery I had a 2 week Liver Shrink diet that was a lot like the Slim-Fast plan with 1 meal, 2 shakes and 2 or 3 Snacks. It won't be bad, many make it through that first stage.B)

oh my goodness! I was just told to eat light the week before surgery and then on 2 day clear liquids then 2 weeks of liquids (anything you can get thru a straw). I thought that was bad enuf i was so happy to see mushie (im still on mushie for 1 more week). Do what your dr. requires it'll be tough but you can do it, i just looked at it like something i had to do. All dr.'s are different maybe yours puts Fluid in your band at operation, mine doesn't.

Wow, that seems like a lot of liquid! I didn't have a pre op diet. Post op is 5 days of liquids, then 5 days of creamy followed by soft foods.

Good luck to you!

I had 10 days liquid pre-op and 1 week clear liguid- then 1 week liquid (anythign you could get thru a straw- 1 week mushies and then slowly start solids-

Every doctor is different and remmeber the band has to heal and settle itself for a bit after surgery - and if your like most of us - you will not even really want to eat the first couple fo weeks GOOD LUCK KEEP US POSTED

Thanks everyone! I know I will be able to do it, but just thinking about it makes me want to panic! I guess I hadn't taken into account the need to heal as part of that 6 weeks too. *sigh*

Thank you so much for the encouragement!!!

You'll do just fine. One thing you'll notice is that each person is different and there is no "set" number of days for each stage of the pre-op diet and the weeks thereafter. The thing is, after a few days, you COULD eat something solid. You won't want to, and really, you could physically eat it. The reason for the liquid and then mushies stages is so that the area where the Lap Band is placed is still very tender. You have to start with nontextured and move to semi-textured very slowly. The band area needs time to heal and get a good grip onto the muscles that it is stitched to. I was super paranoid about the liquid stage too (I don't like Soup, cottage cheese, grits, etc), but I made it through 7 days of nothing but Protein shakes and I'm just starting to re-introduce small amounts of shakes now (banded 7/1). Slow slow slow :)

Thanks everyone! I know I will be able to do it, but just thinking about it makes me want to panic! I guess I hadn't taken into account the need to heal as part of that 6 weeks too. *sigh*

Thank you so much for the encouragement!!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
