How long until you were back at work?

Recommended Posts

I just have a quick question, How long after surgery did you go back to work? Is it possible to have it done on a Wed. and go back the following Mon?

Absolutely. I had surgery on a Tuesday and went back the next Monday. Just be careful about doing anything too strenuous.

Yes!!! That is exactly what I did. Monday was kind tough. My job is mostly office work and no lifting! I was pretty tired by the end of the day!

I'm having mine this coming Thursday and planning to back on Monday. Everyone says I should be able to since I just sit at a desk all day. Hope their right! Good luck.

I had surgery on a Wed. and went back on Tues because it was a holiday weekend. I wish I could have taken longer because I was sore. My dress pants bothered my incision even though I sat at a desk all day. The rest of the week I wore stretchy pants.

Something you all may want to keep in mind - you're not cleared to drive as long as you're on pain medication. So even if you feel great two days later, if you're on pain meds - do not drive. That includes basic pain meds.

I had surgery on Friday, was working from home the next day, was done with pain meds on Sunday, worked from home Monday-Wednesday and was back at the office on Thursday after being cleared to drive (and that was my one week post op visit). By two weeks out I was able to work out with heavy weights without issues.

I had a non-complicated, easy recovery. But was still so sore the first three days (Fri-Sun) that there was no way I could have returned to work on Monday, even for a desk job. Getting up hurt. Gas pain hurt. Shoulder pain hurt. My abdomen hurt and I needed a towel rolled up to provide pressure.

Don't rush your recovery.

I am 3 days post-op, and I went back to work today; but I work a desk job, and I work from home, so I have the luxury of wearing comfortable jammies and being able to get up and walk around or rest when I needed to. I would home that employers do not require people with more physically active jobs to come back right after surgery. My opinion is that even if we feel really great right after surgery, we are still healing.

The anaesthetic left me feeling wiped out for a week plus I had the shoulder pain (which my surgeon said was referred pain from moving my diaphragm and not gas pain) for 10 days. I took two weeks off and didn't feel well enough to go back any earlier.

I also had a bad reaction to the anesthesia and did not feel well for a solid week. I truly thought Id be ready to go back to work a week later and there was no way! Its gonna be almost 2 weeks for me. Everyone is different, and you never know, so I would advise that if you can get 2 weeks just have them available. Ask your job if you're feeling better earlier if you can come back earlier- most places are understanding!

Obviously everyone is different and you won't know how you handle it until you actually have the surgery. I had surgery on Tuesday and was told I would probably feel better to go back to work on Friday. I did not feel well enough by Friday, but by Monday was doing fine. I was still sore and wore stretchy pants (luckily it was winter and I was able to wear jogging suits), but other than that, I was good to go.

Good luck!

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
