prescrip. appetite suppressants pre-surgery?

Recommended Posts

Have any of your surgeons prescribed you a prescription appetite suppressant for your pre-surgery diet? Is there any reason why it would be bad to take a prescription appetite suppressant before lap band surgery?

I ask because a few years back, I used an online pharmacy and ordered some phentermine (37.5) as an appetite suppressant. It worked great for a while, but then the effects wore off. I am really hoping that the lap band will give me the same results, but for the long-term and won't wear off... I think it would be helpful for me to go back on the phentermine until surgery just to get back into the place where eating decisions aren't ruled by my constant hunger, but I certainly don't want to do anything that would be dangerous prior to surgery.

Will my surgeon think I'm crazy if I ask for a prescription? I have an appointment at the end of the month.

Well, it can't hurt to ask anyway. I don't think the doctor will prescribe it, but it might spark a good conversation between you.

I do not think that the Dr will provide you with a prescription for any kind of appetite suppressant, nor do I think he should. You need to let the Lap band do it's job when you have it installed, and the temporary effect that the medication provides will only inhibit that process.

You need to learn to eat differently, you need to allow your body to respond in a natural way to your new eating habits, and depending upon a medication to assist you with that will only get in the way of this process. You might also give your Surgeon the impression that you are not quite ready to do the work necessary to make the Lap Band function as it should.

Appetite Suppressants are a BAD idea, Lap band or not, and it is NEVER a good idea to get started on them.

S.

Im on day 2 and its ok so far. I try to eat a variety of things that I can eat. I snack on fruits and I drink a lot of crystal light. I have lost 2 pounds since starting so I guess thats a plus.

What are you eating?

I understand how you feel stuntmonkey. That was on my mind too when I was preop. But I figured with all the labs they keep taking from me, they are definitely going to see it and that doesn't look good. Just eat like youre supposed to and you will definitely lose weight. By the way I get banded this afternoon! :-)

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
