Which food are forever restricted?

Recommended Posts

None really unless you have a tight band that doesn't allow you to eat certain foods. I keep my band loose, so I can eat anything. It's about restricting quantity not type.

They are my favorites as well. I have had 2 fills and I am able to eat both with no problem.

We are all very different when it comes to types of foods we can and can't tolerate. My list of foods I can no longer eat is pretty long, but I can eat popcorn and nuts sometimes. I don't eat them often because I'm eating other things, but I can eat them. When we go to the movies I can eat a few handfuls of my husband's popcorn. If I find myself hungry between meals I can eat a few almonds to stop the stomach growling. As you try different foods just start out with a couple tiny bites and make sure you chew well. Wait a little bit to see how you react to that food before you eat more. As you get fills and approach your sweet spot, your list of foods that you can't tolerate might get longer.

Since you are newly banded, I don't think you can make a blanket statement of what you can and can't eat. The list for each of us is different...it just depends on what your band can tolerate and you will find out by trying different foods and seeing what works for you. As for me, I can pretty much eat anything. The only times I have ever been stuck was due to eating pork that was on the dry side and salmon that I ate way too quickly. I choose not to eat bread, rice and Pasta but that is what works best for me and my weight loss - I have tried them since being banded and they go down just fine so I could eat them if I wanted. Regarding the foods you mentioned specifically, I can eat both steak and popcorn. I find that with steak, because it is so dense, I tend to be very careful to chew it well and I order it medium rare so I know it won't be too dry.

Steak as long as it is tender and not dry is not a problem. popcorn is ok too. I like the microwave 100 cal packs. bread is for sure on my no no list. Tried one bite of croissont and got stuck. Have heard toast is ok but too scare to try and I really don't miss it

my band will not allow me to eat any kind of ground meat... including hamburger and sausage. there are days i would KILL for a bacon cheeseburger with mayo but that's how i got to be overweight in the first place.

also, i can't eat most breads... including pizza... which is my all-time favorite food. i've learned to adjust though and can eat the crust off one piece and the toppings off 2 pieces.

i can eat popcorn but only if it's not butter flavored. i think the oil upsets my stomach so the healthier alternative is okay and fills my need.

and for me, nuts are hit or miss. if i put only 1 serving size in a baggie i do okay but if i eat out of the container the salt makes me over eat. i also have to make sure that i chew the nuts more than any other food.< /p>

it's all a learning process... you'll get to learn your body so well in the year. good luck!

It is very individual what foods are tolerated.

I can eat some bread, but I mainly choose not to because 1) it's usually high glycemic and will spike my blood sugar and make me hungrier sooner when my blood sugar drops again. 2) I'd rather save the room for other foods 3) Unless it's toasted or a very "grainy" type bread, it's likely to get stuck.

I can eat just about anything. I choose not to eat white carbs (the aforementioned bread), potatoes, rice, Pasta and corn.

Have you tried steak and it doesn't work for you or is this something someone told you? I can eat steak without difficulty. But not dry, tough steak... nice moist tender cuts. Yummy.

I went through phases. For a long time I couldn't eat ground meat. And I still can't eat reheated micro meat unless there is a very limited reheat and there is something to help lubricated it going down.

popcorn is no problem but I don't care for it very often these days. Salads were tough for a while about the first year or so, now most are fine. I still chew very carefully and often end with a plate full of little gritty things I once would have just swallowed. While I can eat pizza, it too is a 'not often' and I much prefer the ultra thin crust rather than the old bready style.

And bread....my one biggest preOp perennial favorite....I'd often have to get 2 loaves of fresh specialty bread to insure ONE would get home....now I can take it or leave it. Yes I can eat it, but not the wadded up dough ball style. I like a thin crispy toasted -yes with butter please-and a regular loaf might last a couple weeks.

It is just the past year I got to where I can actually eat (usually) a whole 2-slice sandwich....and that takes cutting in 4 pieces, going slowly and having various helpers such as lofat mayo or some kind of dressing.

Don't care for Pasta but so what, it ain're really a food by itself. Whatever the stuff that goes with it, can be eaten by itself, and is more enjoyable. There isn't any food group that I can't eat....it's more a matter of how much of it and how often.

I believe the 'permanent restriction' applies only to various phases I've gone through. But carefully heed WHICH phase you are in. Do NOT rush your recovery. And some old favorites just won't be that desireable.

I think everyone tolerates foods differently. My biggest issues have been bread and meats that are a little dry. pizza is awful for me. I love pizza, but it's just not worth it. The few times I've tried to have a slice, it's gotten "stuck", so now no more pizza.

I know I can no longer eat steak and most breads. What about popcorn? It is my favorite thing on earth? And what about nuts too?

I eat all those things.. it depends on your body, and how tight your band is.

Some stuff I gave up because of the caloric content. I seem to not want it if it's REALLY bad for me. I lose my appetite for it.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
