Weight gain-is it normal?

Recommended Posts

I had my surgery yesterday and am up 5 pounds today -- am assuming this is pretty normal and probably the body's way of reacting to "trauma" and IV fluids, meds, etc? I know it can't be from overeating ha ha. I didn't get upset when I saw the scale, for maybe the first time in my life, but I just wanted feedback.

Was this anyone else's experience?

Thanks everyone!

Normal. I would stay off the scale for a few weeks :)

I gained 5 lbs as well the day after, but quickly lost that and another 16 (21 total) since then which was 11 days ago. Totally normal and not a worry. I didn't listen to the "stay off the scale" advice, I couldn't help myself!

I had my band put in yesterday. When I weighed this morning, I had lost 2 pounds. I hadn't thought of gaining weight. That doesn't make sense to me b/c you definitely haven't eaten I"m sure. Did you weigh on the same scale both times? If not, that could be a difference. Just a thought.

I gained about 5 pounds the first few days after surgery. I was told by the nurse not to even weigh myself for a few days because I could become discouraged. But today I am 5 days out and I have lost 2 pounds of it. I think that it helped that yesturday I ate better (or drank I should say) and walked around a little more. It is hard not to weigh myself because on the preop diet my scale and I had such a good relationship and it felt like positive feedback. So dont worry about the first few days focus on getting in the fluids and the rest will take care of itself.

I ate yesterday, but just small portions of broth, Jello, yogurt, milk. Nothing that would cause a 5 pound gain -- but I know the IV fluids during surgery, and the body going thru this will tend to hold onto fluids etc. I'm not worried. I know it will dip down soon enough. So I don't see it as a step backward at all. It is good to know I'm not the only one, though. ;)

weight gain is NORMAL right after surgery. I think about 97%- 99% of all people that will give you feedback will tell you they gained weight right after but lost it quickly. Good Luck on your journey

I think it depends how much saline they run through your IV during surgery. I have heard some people gain much more than that and some people don't gain anything. Don't worry and please don't worry if you don't lose much in the initial post op stages. It WILL happen for you. Just do everything your surgeon tells you to do and you will rock this band!

They did tell me to not even worry about losing the first 2 weeks, that's it's jus ta transition stage. I imagine i will lose since there's no way I;d be taking in the calories I was in my "old life." So, I'm not going to worry...besides, I know slow weight loss is ok if it comes to that. I have a lifetime to lose what I've put on over a lifetime.

My doctor said no...but I am convinced that the gas they shoot you up with is the reason for an early weight gain. LOL He said its because your body goes into a protective mode for a few days after surgery thus saves anything you put in your body. I dont know what to believe but can tell you after 2 weeks of liquid and 1 week of mushies ...unless you are drinking fat ladened milk shakes you should lose weight! Stay off the scale.< /p>

Hello Marcy!

I had my surgery yesterday too! I was curious if I had gained anything and jumped on the scale only to find that yes...I gained 3 pounds! I do think its from all the trauma and fluids we were given. Also, my Fluid "output" isn't that great right now either. I wonder if you or others have had a similar experience with that?

I am so glad to have this forum to hear other peoples experiences.

Bee :D

I haven't had a BM since early yesterday morning, I'm pee'ing but an amount I'd expect for what I'm taking in (maybe a bit less even)...I know if a person retains fluids you'll end up having a day where you pee it all off...so watch for that.

I actually think I need to increase my plain old fluidsa bit...water, tea, juice, milk. I had some no-calorie lemonade but my son scarfed it

Hi Marcy,

I was Banded on Monday 3/14 and noticed I was up two pounds today. I am not worried. Our bodies are all messed up right now and probably in survival mode. I plan to not get on the scale again for awhile. Today I feel so much better than yesterday...Thank goodness!rolleyes.gif

My surgery was yesterday. I don't think I'm getting a full 64 oz of Fluid a day. But my dr said to only drink 1 oz every 5 minutes.....thats tough for me! And my chest is still killing me. I feel like I need to burp so bad!! It's so frustrating!! Anyone else having this?

Steven...Yes I had the "chest pain" also. I was banded on 3/10. Fortunately, it is now gone. I think it last about 4 or 5 days. It will take you a few days before you can burp. I kept thinking the same thing....if I could just burp! Hang in there..it will get better. :)

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
