December 2010 Bandsters out there?

Well, I am officially initiated - I had my first stuck episode last week (2 days after my 2nd fill). It was not fun...and I will be so much more careful!

I had a deli tortilla roll up (bought at wal-mart) that I took to a basketball game to avoid eating crap - hot dog, nacho, etc. So I ate 2 bites and felt like someone was stepping on my chest, lightheaded and eyes watering. And it is true what 'they' say - when it wants to come up, it's coming up. I barely made it to a private area (aka little kids stall at the elementary school bathroom).

So, I am off to Las Vegas for a girls getaway in 2 days :) . I am looking forward to relaxing - and my two primary goals (other than have fun) are: not have another 'stuck' episode and not gain any weight. I don't think I will lose any, but if I maintain I will be happy. On the other hand, it will be a lot of walking, right?

I have a doctor's appointment the week after I get back - I would like to lose another 2 pounds before then - even though he knows I am going to Vegas, I still want to show some progress. I will have 7 days when I get back - wish me luck!

Also, does anyone else use Calorieking.com to track food/exercise? signed up a couple of weeks ago - it is awesome and easy to drag-and-drop my menu items during the day, and it is cool because it remembers my daily stuff even if I go back and forth from my ipad or laptop. I have really been watching calories adn it has the charts and graphs that I printed out and gave to the nutritionists instead of a written diary.

I am rambling tonight, aren't I???:D

Ah man I looove Vegas!! So much food though! But, there are a ton of options which should make it a bit easier. Also you will be distracted so it's easier not to eat.. Haha I had several amazing bowls of oatmeal at Mandalay Bay laugh.gif (I went like a week after I was banded). Go to the Cosmopolitan! It's pretty amazing.

I've been using FitDay, but it takes so long to put everything in i don't do it that much.

Heather,

I know - I love Vegas! We usually try to go for a girls getaway once a year, but it has been 2 years this time... We have a spa day at Mandalay Bay, but we are staying at Plant Holleywood Towers. We usually stay at the Venetian, but wanted to stay someplace different this time.

I have tried the Weight Watchers site, and the Realize site, but Calorieking online version is so easy. You should give it a try..they have a 7 day free trial!

I want to hit up 1 buffet and take a one bite out of everything :-))

Well, guess who had a flipped port? ME! Got it fixed on 2/18 and got my first fill then, too. Now maybe I can finally see some weight drop off!

Did you have to go back in form surgery? Did your Doc say why/how this happened?

I hope you are feeling better!

I lost a pound this week and am happy to see the scale moving again. :D

Vicky~ So glad to hear your trip went so well including the regular length seat belt.

I love Vegas, too! I lived there for 3 months and worked as a traveling nurse at a local hospital. Fun times!

Newlifekp~ I live in NM and we eat tortillas all the time. My nutritionist said they are one of the worst foods for getting stuck. I still eat them but VERY cautiously and in small amounts. I ate part of one dipped in chile today and it was fine. Corn tortillas are much better tolerated than flour tortillas.

Heather~ Did anyone else recognize you besides me?! I still can not believe that!

Joan

Well I freaked out my 5 year old twins today... I had a stuck episode at lunch and ANOTHER at dinner when they were here. That is so painful and I am now a little scared to eat.. I think I am going to go to some shakes and mushies for a day.. The first time I think I was eating too fast, gotta a little stuck but was able to finish my meal. Second time was way worse with only a few small bites. I may have been a little swollen or something from earlier I don't really know what happened. I felt like I couldn't breathe and was well freaking out just a little :) I have got to be more careful now because I so do not want that to happen again.

I feel your pain! I think my stuck episodes have primarily been due to my eating too fast and not chewing well enough. I can sometimes stop them by chewing a couple of TUMS. Drinking liquids is the worst thing for me to do, it comes right back up. ugh!

How are you doing now?

Thank you so much.. I am doing well now but I went to the gym Tuesday night and It hurt to even walk on the treadmill. The deep breathing in my chest was painful!! I still was sore yesterday so I stayed on liquids and mush and today back on solids. I have always been a fast eater and I have to really remind myself to slow down and chew chew chew. I have slowed down a lot already but with the last fill I have to be even more cautious. I never realized how painful stuck episodes were going to be.. I guess that will teach me to slow it down and stop shoveling my food :)

Thanks for the tums trick too.. My first instinct is always to try and drink something, I am sure I just make it worse.

Hi Everyone!

I am back from Vegas and I think I may have even lost a pound or two! I just logged everything I ate in my online food diary (really slooooowwww internet access in the hotel) and I am shocked by how many calories I consumed eating at fine dining restaurants. It is a really good think we walked so much and my net calorie intake wasn't too bad.

One of the girls I went with also has a lapband and she is 5 years out. She had quite a few stuck episodes - I felt really bad for her, but also prayed that I don't have as much senstivity to what I can/can't eat as she does.

Well, I am off to bed to try to catch up on some sleep. I even skipped my monthly support meeting tonight - between just getting home and semi-blizzard conditions here, it just seemed like a good idea. Plus, I am not sure I would win Mother of the Year award if I just got home from Las Vegas and turned around and left for the evening, even for the support group. It is the first one I missed since surgery.

I go for my first fill next Thursday. Hopefully, I can lose another pound or two!

Night!

Getting stuck is the worst and after a couple stuck episodes, you basically are conscientious about it from then on so you force yourself to eat small bites, chew really well and know what you are eating. Getting stuck is a pretty big deterrent in my mind, it's not something I enjoy so I try to take lots of precautions to avoid it.

Sometimes I'll even take a few sips of warm Water before I eat anything questionable

Hi guys. Just getting back on the forum again and was reading through the last months posts. Everybody looks to be doing great. Go December Bandsters!!!

Isn't it amazing how different doctors approach the fills. I didn't realize the amounts of fills could vary so much. I've had 2 fills for a total of 2.8 in an 11cc band. My last fill was 2/14 and just this week really started feeling the restriction--like most others have said, it's when I've eaten too fast/not chewed well. I'm still getting hungry about every 2 hours though. I have noticed more hungar on the days I drink caffenated coffee so I've switched to Decaf. Better for Fluid totals anyway as getting my Fluid is problematic for me. When you eat every 2 hours and can't drink for 30 minutes after it doesn't leave a lot of time for drinking. Add a fluid deficit due to the caffenated coffee and it's even more difficult.

Heather--you asked a while back about Snacks. I keep ZonePerfect Protein bars on hand and eat one of those when I need a snack or the greek yogurt others have mentioned. The Protein Bars are pretty good for a chocolate fix and have 12 grams of Protein. I'm having trouble keeping my kids out of them so it can't be just my chocolate starved palate!!! lol

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
