Georgia Lapbanders

Recommended Posts

I've noticed there are a lot of us from Georgia, specifically metro Atlanta.

I was thinking it might be good if we all found each other in one thread and maybe make some LAP-BAND® buddies that we could actually reach out to.

My name is Paige and I live in Stockbridge, GA. I'm a 41 year old single mother to a beautiful 23 year old daughter and two handsome sons(18 and 13 years old).

I was skinny most of my life, then I hit 35 and it's been a landslide of fat since then. I've watched in horror as I've gone from size 6 to a size 20 in just six years.

My surgeon is Dr. Gorjala and he operates out of Southern Regional Hospital. I chose him and his staff, not only because I have heard good things about him/them, but because they have a satellite facility about 15 minutes from where I work and I'll eventually be able to get my fills there on my lunch hour.

My LAP-BAND® journey has already been a complete year, beginning with my first seminar last September. It's been a long and bumpy road, but I'm almost there now.

I'm really excited and can't wait to finally have some accountability as far as my eating habits go.

I too am in Stockbridge! I have 2 sons, age 10 and 12. I have been overweight for as long as I can remember, and it is time I took control of my life. I choose to use Dr. Titus Duncan at Atlanta Medical Center, and I can not say enough good things about him or his staff.

I am scheduled to be banded on 10/8! And I am so excited!

I look forward to meeting all of my fellow GA bandsters!

I remember you saying you were in Stockbridge too.

Which schools do your boys attend? Mine go to Woodland Middle and Woodland High.

Today is my oldest sons 18th birthday. Happy Birthday to Tyler!

Oh and I am pretty sure I read yesterday that someone else is using your same doctor. I hope she'll show up here and post with us!

Thanks for the directions, Paigey! Sometimes I think someone should lead me around by the hand.LOL. I wish I was closer so that I could be involved with my fellow banders. It takes about an hour and forty-five minutes to get to Atlanta from here. That's why I won't be able to go to the nutrition classes that Emory has once a month. There is NO way I would travel around there at night!! It's bad enough in the daytime (ha! ha!). I am a small town girl. But thanks for the thought. I'm sure there will be many that woill love to be in a good group. I will be banded on 10/18. I am so ready. I appreciate any advice anyone can give me to make this journey easier. I really enjoy reading everyone's thoughts. Thank you again.

My support group meetings are in Riverdale at Southern Regional, but that's probably as bad as going into Atlanta. In fact, my bf doesn't let me go alone just because of the area.

Y'all, I've only got two more days!

This weekend was pure torture too. We had a party for my son's birthday Friday night and I've had to look at left over cake and ice cream all weekend. I think I did well though. I fixed myself a slice of cake after we sang Happy Birthday, but ended up only eating about 3 small bites before pushing it away.

Y'all, I've got about 5 hours before I have to go to the hospital.

Nothing to eat or drink today. I'm going to go crazy!

I was already up at 7:00 AM and cleaning my carpets just to keep my mind off of everything.

Thank you for the well wishes!

Hey fellow Ga girls!!

I'll give you a bit of background on myself. My name is Aleasha & I'm originally from Stockbridge but now live in Barnesville--out in the country. I have always been teeny tiny all my life...UNTIL my mid 20's. I began having some major health issues...ulcerative colitis, crohns disease, PCOS.... I have lost the weight several times--but of course it finds its way back! I am a nurse & love my life, but I'm very unhappy with the size I am. I just don't feel like myself and I decided it's time to do something about it. A fellow nurse friend told me about Dr. Titus Duncan. I checked him out, went to the seminar and I was sold! I'm in the beginning of the 6mo required visits...I'm hopeful my band date will be in April. Paigey, you are in my thoughts and I'm sure all will go well with your surgery!! Good luck to everyone!!

Hey! I am Stacy, 32 year old from Buford, GA. I too use Dr. Titus Duncan. He and his staff have been wonderful! I am married and have a beautiful adopted Guatemalan 4 year old daughter!

My journey has been a slow one so far, but I am hoping that my weight loss begins to speed up! :smile2:

Surgery went well. I didn't expect so much pain, but it's bearable.

What's not bearable is the fact that while I was in surgery, my brother in law passed away. He was only 39 and in seemingly good health. He was my sisters everything and now our family is just so devastated.

Rest in peace, Jason Cobb.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
