Getting banded on Monday...What is the most important thing(s) I need to know?

Recommended Posts

Will there be a lot of water/fluid weight after surgery? If so, how long should it be before that starts to go away? How difficult is the all liquid post-op diet? Any suggestions are what others used to help them thru the all liquid diet that help satisfy their hunger? How soon should I see some difference in my weight? I'm not trying to be impatient I am just VERY excited. It's time for a new start and I am ready!!! Thanks for any advice you can give to a newbie!

Everybody has a different experience. I sailed through the surgery fairly easily and didn't have much pain. What I did have was easily sorted out with the meds the Dr gave me.

The thing that I found worst was nausea - but then I have always had post op nausea. The thing that helped most was when I was allowed to add Soups. I think my body was sick of the sweet artificial shakes and wanted some real food. My NUT had suggested adding Beans, pulses, chickpeas etc to soups(homemade veggie) and then blending them to a thin consistency. That adds Protein which helps to keep you satisfied.

The postop period is hard but because you know the end is in sight it is doable.

You won't believe how good mushy food tastes after 2 weeks(or whatever your surgeon recommends) on liquids.

All the best.

Congrats on your upcoming surgery! I had mine on Mon. 6/21/10! I am happy to say that the Water weight from the IV's was not bad, about 5 pounds. Since my surgery I have lost a total of 10lbs from my weigh in before surgery.

My advice is to go to the hospital really hydrated. My goal was 68oz. a day pre-surgery and I kept to that right up until the no liquids cut off, the night before.

I felt really good after surgery and continue to feel good. I definitely tire easily, but I am walking a few blocks 3x a day and I think that has helped, too.

I have progressed to liquids like strained Soups and cream of wheat, which makes me feel so much better. Have not felt hungry, but feel pretty full after that 2 oz. of soup!

Good luck and keep us all posted on your progress!

Thank you so much for your responses. Your suggestions will certainly help me in my post-op progress. I have been trying to get as much information as I can so it helps to get some good advice from others who have gone thru the same thing. Again, thanks!

I was banded on Thursday, and I definitely advise SIPPING not GULPING! Oh the pain when you gulp is BAD. But I'm getting there, now I just make sure everything I drink is out of a straw, that way I can only sip

Thanks Gwenn and congrats to you too!!!

Everyplace I've read and my doc said no straws, causes more gas.....I know our doc's give different info but u may want to double check on that b/f making it a habit.

Have you lost any weight yet? Did you feel like you had any fluid/water retention after surgery? I've heard that might be something to not look forward to but all in all I'm just happy to be finally having the lap-band!

Hmm well since having it done I've lost 2.2lbs. I need to pee a lot and the gas is drivin me crazy. As for the straw business, I can't find anything about them in my rules, but ill see how I go without one today

my doctor said absolutely NO STRAWS!!

the biggest thing to know is that you will be in pain!! Take the pain meds every 4hrs!! also, make sure you have gasx ready! i also had nausea and took my nausea meds every 4hrs as well!! I had mine done on 6/16 and the last two days i have finally felt like myself. had lots of Fluid retention but it slowly went away--took about 4 days. I have lost almost 5 lbs although...doc said not to weigh myself and heal first....hard not to do for me!! my doc recommends moving from liquid to chunky food around day 7 if you can tolerate. I had about 3oz of steak last nite. ate slowly and had no prob. Tonight i had salmon. also no problem but I am taking my time to eat and chew, chew chew....

For me reading other peoples posts has helped alot! To know that you are not alone. everybody heals at different pace and you will see that from what others post. It's comforting to know others have gone through and survived what you will go through!

good luck all!!

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

So proud of you Cat. Getting into those smaller size clothes is half the fun isn't it?. Keep up the good work!!!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
