When can I drink through a straw?

Recommended Posts

Hi wonderful people -

I'm 8 days out from surgery and feeling great. All liquids and Proteins are in and I'm getting skinnier by the day. =)

I prefer my Protein Shakes very cold, BUT I have sensitive teeth and it's killing me to not use a straw. When did you start using one after surgery? The literature from my surgeon/nut mention to NOT use one during Clear Liquids, but say nothing about the full liquid period.

Thoughts? Opinions?

Thanks!

My surgeon let me use the straw after surgery in the hospital. He hasn't found any negatives with them. I did fine.

3 months, I did it by accident. Since I didn't die or burst into flames I kept doing it. Looking back I wish I had done it sooner, it makes getting fluids in so much easier. Just be careful you don't drink to fast with them. I think that is more of a real danger than air.

Congrats on your progress so far! I also was using a straw in the hospital. I was in for 3 nights, had complications with my oxygen levels dropping when I would get up to walk. Used straw whole time there and still use a straw, I too have sensitive teeth.

My surgeon's materials said no straw, but it also recommended a Water bottle like a Camelbak -- uhmm...those utilize a straw. I called him on it, and he said the no straw rule was standard, but silly. I used a straw from day 1.

But that was just ME.

I've used a straw from day 1........if it works for you go for it.....if it makes you feel better ask your doctor.

I know we are "supposed" to say, "Follow your own plan--whatever YOUR bariatric team told you to do, then just do it."

There I said it.

Personally, I'm beginning to think that "The Great Straw Debate" is just something for the old timers to nip and pik at each other about. --Like sitting across a checker board discussing how Elvis' hip gyrations are ruining the younger generation's morality.

Be informed. Get your team's input. Follow your common sense.

I've been using a straw since my second post-surgery week. felt like it helped a little with the burping and made me felt better . haven't stopped since.

I too had a drink with a straw served while still in hospital. No issues then or now. I often drink with a straw, I make a tight seal with my mouth, and it is fine. My NUT said that straw was OK for me :)

WTF are you talking about? Most "vets" agree it's a stupid rule. Let's not make something out of nothing. ;)

Personally, I love reading a good old nip and pik thread. Have been known to add my own two pennyworth occasionally although at 10 months out I don't quite qualify for vet status yet. I've used a straw and had no problems whatsoever but I waited for quite a while after my op as I was being a good obedient patient and a bit of a wimpy goody two shoes.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
