First Week at Home Question

Recommended Posts

I'm scheduled for revision on August 29 - a Monday...taking the week off and then will have Labor Day off as well. My husband will be there for surgery and 2 days in hospital and bring me home...but then has an event out of town on Thursday that he wants to go to over the weekend. I was single when I had the lapband done and managed just fine. I have friends I can call. I am fine with him leaving, but just wanted to get some reassurance for both him and me. He feels bad (sort of) and I want him to go. Just need some idea of the condition I'll be in that first week.

Thanks

Life isn't an exact science. I was in the hospital for 2 days after RNY gastric bypass surgery. I felt well enough that if they let me, I would have gone home after the first day. But some other patients in the ward were not so well off. They had a hard time getting out of bed and walking. Some had additional complications.

In my case I refused all pain medicine after I left the recovery room. I didn't need any because my pain levels were very low. I also wanted to drive soon after surgery and you cannot drive unless you are off all your pain meds. I walked each day for a half an hour in the 8 months prior to my operation and walking really put my body in shape for the operation with a quick recovery. In the hospital, I began walking almost as soon as I was put in bed after the operation. The nurse even had to meet me and tell me to lay off the walking. I think I walked 100 lapse in the hospital. So this not only contributed to a quick recovery but also I was very stable on my feet because of the lack of drugs.

So what is rolling around in my head is operation on Monday. Release from hospital on Wednesday. Waiting on doctor to sign off paperwork to leave hospital so it will be in afternoon Wednesday. Husband takes you home and buys prescription meds you will need after operation to prevent blood clots. He leaves for trip to be there by Thursday. There is very little time for a hiccup. What is the plan if something gets delayed?

Good observations James. The good news is he's driving, not flying, so can cancel at the last minute. Good thoughts on the walking too.

I had my surgery this past Monday and stayed in the hospital 2 nights. Staying hydrated and walking will make a huge difference while in the hospital. I can already take my dogs out and made a trip to the store with my hubby today. Was easily tired, but it's major surgery so that's expected. Two things: the gas after surgery is worse than the incisions.....walk as much as tolerable, this really helped and be prepared for discomfort at the old port site......ouch, it's tender! Kind of like doing a thousand sit ups. Have some extra pillows near. I also had some cold packs ready and a heating pad. I set up my bedroom with prescribed medications easily accessible, water/liquids close by, phone/charger close, and Comfy pj's. My husband had to work the last three days and I was able to manage being well prepared. Like James marusek said.....waking really really helped my recovery.....I walked daily until the day of surgery. Keep us updated and ask lots of questions. You got this

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
