Hi everyone! I have a couple of questions for people regarding Water intake after VSG.

1) How many months post-op are you, & how much Water can you drink on an empty stomach?

2) Were you able to drink enough daily recommended water the first month after surgery? How hard was it on a scale from 1-10?

3) Have you guys ever drank water while eating? Were you able to eat more or less?

4) I've heard people say, even the taste of water changes after surgery, have you noticed this yourself?

5) Overall on a scale of 1-10 how hard is it to get in the daily amount of water in NOW?

Ahhh, sorry for all these questions, but I genuinely love drinking water :] I would prefer a ice cold glass of water compared to a soda any day, so I really was curious of how water drinking behavior changes after surgery. Any questions that you guys would answer will help me a lot :) I thank you for your time!!!

1) I am 5 days post op. I don't really know how much I can drink on an empty stomach.

2) I have been able to meet the required 64oz of Water since the day after surgery, but it is definitely a full time job.

3) I am not drinking Water while I am eating.

4) I have not noticed a change in the taste of water, however it is easier for me to drink room temperature water than cold.

5) On day 1 post op, it was a 10 in difficulty getting all the water in. Now on day 5 I would say it's a 7 in difficulty so while it is still hard, it is getting easier!

@@AchieveGoals - Strangely I have never really had a problem getting enough Water in. Initially I used a shot glass just to keep me from doing too much at one time, but after a week that wasn't necessary. The reason they want you to sip and go slow when you are fresh from surgery is your stomach is healing. The stomach is creating a permanent seal, but this is a time of transition. You just don't want to mess up that process. I'm a year and 3/4 post surgery and just don't have any problems drinking plenty of Water. I do a little water with my meal if the food is dry. I prefer not because the sleeve seems to prefer it. I know my surgeon and NUT prefer that too.

I am 18 months post WLS.

I now prefer flavored room temperature Water. I can consume 16 oz. in about 5-8 mins.

I never drink while eating, however, I can eat immediately following drinking, don't need to wait 15 mins. I did follow the ( eating) 15-30 minute after drinking rule until about 15 months post surgery.

Initially I could not get in the recommended 64 ozs, but by 4 weeks it was no longer difficult.

I have no problem reaching the 64 oz. daily goal now.

It is different for all of us, but you will do your best and it will all work out.

10 months out and I have been drinking 90+ oz. for about 5-6 months now. Don't matter if it's cold or room temp. But I'm no longer fond of plain Water. I need some flavor to it. Even if it's just lemon juice.

I am almost 5 weeks post op and I get 100 oz of water a day. I am at the point where I can gulp water. I drank 100 oz a day pre op.

I was not able to get the recommend 64 oz til about 2.5 weeks out.

I have not tried to drink while eating cuz I'm skeered.

Water does not taste any different.

I'm 4 days post op and I'm fairly confident I can be drinking more Water. I take it slow knowing the capacity isn't there but it is definitely a 3 on the scale of difficulty. If you're like me and really babying your sleeve, you have to consciously think to drink every 10-15 minutes or so. But it is definitely feasible!

3) Not quite at a food stage where I can address that question.

4) I have not, I still love my water!

5) 1 being super simple and 10 being the hardest ever, a 3-4.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
