Numbness and neurological complications

Recommended Posts

Has anyone had numbness or neurological complications from their gastric sleeve? I have numbness mostly from the chest down but sometimes everywhere including my head and face. I am pretty much on a 3 month waiting list to see a neurologist where I live. I went to see one where my surgery was preformed but he came up with nothing. My surgeon acts like he never heard of this yet I can read about this complication. Has anyone else had this happen to them? I read thst this can happen from Vitamin deficiency and when I first got out of the hospital I didn't take good Vitamins and I threw up all the time. I need help but don't know where to get it. My surgeon was no help.

You need to obtain ALL of your medical records......I hope that you get better.....do you have terrible pain in your feet and hands ? Are you taking medication ? Who operated on you ? What hospital ?

I've had problems. They were helped by banana bag/fluid infusions, and jacking up the EMG's power to the point where I felt the after effects in my muscles for hours. Steroids have helped tremendously.

Btw, my surgeon said the same thing. He was not correct, as there is literature about neuro problems after surgery. They just don't read the research.

I have numbness in my legs caused by Vitamin b deficiency

I've had issues also. It has to do with allowing the bariatric surgeon community to get away with it. 40-45% is the profit margin I've seen for bariatrics. The aftercare, especially past a year, is horrid.

Out of places like this, thanks to Alex Brecher, I owe a lot. This is where you get a lot of support.

Have you been tested for the Vitamin deficiency to see if infact, that is the case ?Could it be something else? I have consulted with many physicians and now, they suggest that I take a glucose tolerance test.....as wel as an antibody test that tests for Fabry Disease as well as an antibody test for something called: Anti -Hu ?They also suggested having a surgeon do a

deep tissue biopsy of the fat, muscle, nerve in my leg/thigh ......?there is a neurologist that I will try and see at: Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore,Md. who specializes in problems post operation of the vertical

sleeve bariatric surgery..his name is: Dr. Michael Polydefkis You are right......after the operation....the surgeon does not want to deal with the issues he/she never told you about........

Yes. I requested a muscle biopsy and got overruled. This is on top of situation where the creatinine level dropped in half.

If possilbe...gather and request ALL of your medical records and consult with a specialist in neurology who is familiar with these issues.........perhaps, the Dr at Johns Hopkins......? I have been in touch with NIH National Institutes of HEalth...try and read their research on these issues..........

I do not know of anyone in California......however, it might be a good thing for you to do research.....Mayo Clinic and NIH National Institutes of Health

I am going to see someone at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore,Md ...

perhaps, you could call and get a name in California......with all of the fine medical centers......ie...Skripps,Cedar-Sinai,Rush ? You could write to NIH at the Rare and Undiagnosed Disease Program and see if they could help?

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
