Less tolorent after healing?

Recommended Posts

Hey all i had RNY December 1st so im a dew days shy of 2 months. So my diet was 2 weeks liquids 2 weeks puree and 6 weeks soft foods. First 3 stages were good no issues when i started soft foods i was doing well as well but I've noticed that now almost nothing sets well unless it yogurt really soft Cereal. Even my go to ground beef and Beans isn't really setting well. I have a few bite and get nauseous so not even eating 1/4 cup. Protien bars seem ok but everything takes me forever to eat like almost an hour if not more. Things weren't like this at first is it that my pouch is less tolorent now that I've healed more?? Anyone else go through this?

I don't know but for me, things go in cycles. There are times that I feel like I could eat a lot and anything then other times, just a few bites of something and I'm done. I can't quite find the pattern yet but it just might be that my body keeps changing. I do remember that in a yoga class the instructor said "everyday you bring a different body to class" because sometimes you can easily do the poses and other times it is a real struggle. I relate that to eating, too, now.

You are still new at this so take your time and find what works for you. It will keep changing

I am now almost 16 months out and I still don't know the pattern of what my sleeve will tolerate and whati it won't. Pretty universally I get sick on melty cheese or chocolate or any form of melted fat, fish always makes me sick, about 50% of the time chicken and steak make me sick, and then sometimes something that has never bothered me will result in instant barfing. Like someone else said, it goes in cycles in a sense. Sometimes there are days where I am great, nothing bothers me, and I can really eat, and then there are days where I can't eat anything. Calorie wise it all tends to work out in the end. Oddly enough, my sleeve was more tolerant in the beginning of the process than it is now. I used to get hot flashes and burpiness when I ate the wrong thing or too much for about the first 4-5 months, then I was golden for about the next 6-7 months, then around the year mark, everything started making me sick. I think part of the problem was that I stopped eating slowly, so I suppose if I pay more attention to that, I may have fewer issues. I think I also discovered that when I felt sick, I could just barf and I would feel instantly better, whereas in the earlier phases I just laid in bed and felt sick for about an hour after eating.

Good luck!

As you progress through the food stages, you are really putting stress on your pouch. It takes months to be completely healed. Don't be afraid to forego foods that are hard to digest. Use gravies on your meats to help them slide down or crock pot them so that they are really wet.

This is the "Hunger Hormone". While your pouch is healing it stops making this hormone. My hunger came back around 10 months post op. Enjoy hunger free living while it lasts.

I'm 6 weeks post op. Still have trouble with food feeling caught or stuck in my upper chest, causing severe pain and nausea. Not sure if taking too big of bites or just not giving enough time between swallowing. Went to Chicago for weekend. First meal in airport, I had 2 fries and 2 bites of bbq pork roast. Promptly ran to bathroom for all that to come up after severe pain. Really limited what I ate and watched bite sizes after that, but still ran into episodes of nausea after just mashed potatoes and grilled veggies.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
