I haven't had any sugar or fattening food for 2 1/2 months. I won't even eat sugar free candy. It seems the longer I go without it, the less I crave it. I want to get to the point that I almost forget what it tastes like. It sometimes is helpful to perceive it as poisen.

I know that this strategy can be seen as a little extreme to others. I've tried being wishy-washy about eating sweets and it doesn't work. That is not to say it won't work for you. I'm just the type that might take a couple of bites of pecan pie for lunch and spend the rest of the afternoon feeling guilty. By dinner time, I would go ahead and eat two large pieces since I blew the day to hell anyway. While I'm at it, why don't I eat a plate of mash potatoes, stuffing, and turkey. It's that dreaded black or white thinking that got me so fat in the first place.

You have to figure out what is right for you. It's always good to plan ahead and strategize. Good luck!

Well I said I have to get back to the real world and try to get to the point of not being greedy or over doing it so I decided I'll probably eat thanksgiving but I've decided any coconut pie left will be thrown away that same evening no leftovers

I'm not a year out but the only thing I would like to add is maybe take the piece of pie home or have it once people leave just in case it gives you dumping syndrome. If you haven't had anything sweet, who knows how your body will react. That would be my only fear. Don't want to get sick in the middle of a big family gathering.

I am 20 months out and can pretty much eat anything but of course smaller amounts. I never gave up sweets very long so I learned by about 2-3 months out when I first tried something sweet that high sugary stuff does cause me to dump even with a sleeve. So I can only ever have a bite or 2 of cake or ice cream or pie and if I have more than that I pay for it by having palpitations, flushing, sick stomach feeling, fatigue, etc.

So you may want to try something small and sweet before you go or as someone suggested take home a doggie bag or save for when you are alone.

I am actually glad I dump because then I can decide if something will be worth it and I don't waste it on calories they aren't. For example, it's worth it for home made pie but not for mass produced and even then no ice cream!

I am three weeks away from my one year, and my suggestion would be to eat a couple of boiled eggs before you go or a couple of devilled eggs when you get there. Eat as much turkey as you can hold, and then an itty bit of the dressing and pie - just enough to say you did.

I'd say go for it! I'm not a fan of thinking anything is off limits....I just want to be normal. I plan on eating a couple bites of everything. But beware like others warned - you never know how something new might go over. around 4 months I had my first bite of cheesecake and my first glass of wine. Both felt funny, but I didn't dump or anything like that. Just have one or two bites or even take it home to try out just in case.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
