Sugar vs Sugar Free

Recommended Posts

Hello all! I am almost 3 weeks post op and I was wondering if anyone is having the same problems as me. I can not tolerate most sugar free items. I get a terrible upset stomach and nausea. But if I drink something without sugar free I'm fine. Is there something wrong? I'm kind of torn between drinking and eating what I'm supposed to and feeling sick or drinking the other stuff and feeling fine. I've been just drinking Water lately. I see my doctor in 2 days.

I too had trouble. I has gotten easier as the weeks go by. My goal is to try and get off the fake sugar too! I used to have trouble with "splenda" before surgery but I can tolerate it now and I am 8 weeks out. I had to take lactose pills before drinking the Protein. It was still hard to get them down early on. Wish you luck in finding the right thing for you. I have had to keep trying new things.

Sugar Alcohol will upset peoples stomachs easily for some.

You might be having problems with the whey Protein and might need to take lactose pills to help digest it. Ask your nutritionist about this.

There is egg white Protein powder that you can ask your nutritionist about if that could be substituted instead. Jay Robb makes that. All of Jay Robb products use Stevia as their sweetener. I use Jay Robb products and have no problem.

Read labels carefully.

This could be a temporary problem and might go away as you progress.

I would really discuss this with the surgeon's office and most certainly with your nutritionist so you can get the right nutrition in you.

Good luck and feel good.

I was a little scared to use stevia in my hot tea today, but no issues. I had some hot tea with Splenda at the hospital and no issues there either. Good luck!

Not everybody dumps on sugar after surgery. I don't and I wish I did. Unless I go waaaaay overboard on sugar by downing half a litre of fruit juice in 20 minutes or something, in which case I will have thoroughly deserved it because that's something like 150g of sugar right there in liquid form that goes right through you and hits your gut instantly. I do fine with some artificial sweeteners, but not the sugar alcohols: they are evil. They are also the sweetener of choice in most diabetic candies, which is why I stay far away from SF candies. I never could tolerate any of the Protein powders either, but that is because I am a special medical snowflake who is missing a digestive enzyme and physically cannot digest them rather than an RNY issue.

You will just have to be more vigilant in your food choices because you have the flexibility. It's so tempting to grab that iced tea from the shelf, knowing it won't make you sick, but you have to look at the nutritional information and do the math to realize that the bottle has 56g of sugar in it. Then put it back on the shelf. I have found that my tastes have changed since my surgery and most drinks have become too sweet for me anyway. You end up saving a ton by drinking Water.

You're just out of surgery so you don't yet really know if you're a dumper or not. It can develop over the next few months or you may find out you're a fat dumper rather than a sugar dumper, or an ice Water dumper, or caffeine. Or eventually you will have something that hits your threshold and bam, dumpsville. Time will tell.

My dietician told me not to consume sugar alcohols. Splenda is okay to use. But I use real sugar in small amounts. So far no problems and one year out this week. I make iced tea at home so you can use the amount you want. And of course Water is good for staying hydrated. fruit juice is really sweet and could cause problems. But the sugar alcohols really makeme sick. You have to find what works for you as we are all different. Good luck.

I cannot do artificial sweeteners of any kind, if I use sugar I use real sugar in tiny amounts. Since surgery I am also lactose intolerant.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
