If you could go back in time before surgery Knowing what you know now about WLS and your results what would you say to the scared over-weight you?

I am early in the journey (almost 2 months) but I would say:

"Contrary to popular belief, this is not going to be easy. The weight will not always just fall off. You will still have to work at it. Your emotions will get the best of you many times when you stall or even gain, but realize this is not a sprint, it's a marathon".

I'd tell me that everything is going to be okay. That the sleeve will actually help manage my/her out of control hunger and cravings. I'd tell her to make a strong commitment to thinking about food in a new way and redefining her relationship with food. (Actually I told myself that last part back then and I really did shake things up).

I was a band-to-sleeve revision, so having had one weight loss surgery fail I was so much more scared of failure the 2nd time.

I assume you're pre-op? I recommend reading a lot on this site and getting yourself as prepared as you can for the way you'll be eating post sleeve - and for what to expect before/after surgery.

This is an awesome thread -

1. GET A GRIP! You're not going to die.

2. This is the best thing you have ever done and yeah, it will be hard at first but it will get much better

3. It will totally change your life in the best way possible

4. FEAR IS A LIAR

Sometimes I just need a little tough love to get through... :)

I was prepared to lose weight, but I was not prepared for the stalls. Thank goodness for this forum so that I had fellow bariatric patients to communicate with. From all of my new friends here, thank you for teaching me that stalls are like lovers: your first will probably not be your last. :D

If I could go back, I'd go ahead and go back at least 10 years ago and say don't delay, do it now. You'll thank me later.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
