How much does the sleeve hold?

Recommended Posts

Hi! I'm about 2.5 weeks out, surgery was on April fools day. I have so many emotions going on its crazy. Tonight the biggest is fear and worry; I was able to drink/eat a cambells Soup to go in its entirety, this really shocked me because it is 10oz. Is that normal? I didn't feel overly full. Makes me wonder if my sleeve is too big. I had not eaten much since 11:30 am. I was even still feeling hungry and ate a sugar free pudding cup an hour later. I have still had less than 500 cals all day. Up until now it seemed I was only able to eat smaller portions. Any thoughts? Thanks, Sarah

While 10 oz seems like a lot in 1 sitting (especially at 2 1/2 weeks), for the most part, Soup is liquid, so I wouldn't worry too much about the amount you had. Remember to pace yourself, and eat slowly. Make sure you're getting all your fluids too. Be sure to track all your meals. If you continue to remain concerned, contact your NUT or surgeon. They might be able to make suggestions to help you out.

I'm 3 months out, and can eat about 3-4 ounces of Protein and a few bites of veggies (something like spinach). I'd say 1/2 to 1 cup of food in volume, and I feel full. I do have Snacks in between meals, though I was told not to eat anything unless I was actually hungry. I try to make it a healthy snack (Protein Bar, cheese, yogurt...). I no longer eat bread, rice or Pasta because that swells in my stomach and I don't like the full feeling.

Hang in there. This is very much a roller coaster-ride of emotions. It does get easier / it goes get better :)

Very normal. Once you're on dense Protein, you will feel the restriction. I can take in more volume in a liquid form than I ever could in a dense form.

you can always have more liquid food like Soup than solid food. The normal for solid food for me is no more than one half cup at a meal Now I couldn't eat an entire can of soup to go but i certainly can eat more soup than solid food. This solid and liquid food combo is tricky..... you can eat more but you will be hungry way sooner..... maybe even an hour or two later if not sooner. liquids pass through the sleeve quickly but still all get absorbed there in the intestines. You can end up injesting more caloried when you do this. I love soup but sometimes only drink the broth in between meals to curb hunger ..... it workds great for that and something hot feels good on the stomach. I don't think your stomach stretched. Now if you can eat more than a cup of solid food that might mean that possibly. My body tells me when i've eaten too much or close to it.... Listen to what your body tells you. I get a choked up feeling and gassy when I've reached my limit. Good Luck.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
