Thyroid issues

Recommended Posts

Hi. This is my first post on this group.

I was wondering if anyone has developed HYPERthyroid issues POST-surgery? I am 3 months out. Very early after surgery, in routine blood tests, it was discovered. Pre-surgery, thyroid was normal.

I'd be interested in hearing from anyone with this problem and what was done about it, if anything.

I am told that it is helping me lose weight faster (thyroid overworking) but this is really not desirable.

Thx.

Thyroid changes can happen with hormone fluctuations (so I've been told...I'm not a doctor). For instance, it is not uncommon to develop thyroid problems right after giving birth even if you had no problem before. It usually evens itself back out by around 6 months from what I've read. I'm curious what your doctor had to say about it.

The endocrinologist insists that WLS and my thyroid problem are unrelated. I'm still doing tests to see exactly where the problem is.

Has your endocrinologist tested you for Graves Disease?

I suffer from hypothyroidism which was never there untill the birth of my daughter. Since then its been a struggle for me and weight which prior I had zero issues with. I'm concern how my hypo will play out with me losing weight after VSG. from the few people in other networks I've heard their meds have decreased, and they seem at least some to lose weight at a slower rate, than someone without hypo. Would love any who has hypo and had wls to please give me some insight thank-you and GOOD MORNING TO ALL LET TODAY BE A PRODUCTIVE SUPPORTIVE DAY!

I had my surgery 10/24/13 and have lost 75lbs. I am hypothyroid since I had my son almost 12 yrs ago and noticed about a month and a half now my throat starting hurting so I had my levels checked and they were way low so now back to the endo. Yes they do change as you lose weight so have them check it more often. It had me at a stand still for losing weight now.

I've had hypothyroidism since I was 8 years old... 32 years, now. I take 200 mcg of Synthroid. Losing weight has always been a huge struggle for me. The day I had surgery, 09/25/2013, I weighed 263 lbs. Now, I weigh 179 lbs. - 84 lbs. lost so far! My weight loss has not been hindered by my thyroid problem at all. I eat low carb, track everything I eat, and the weight has come off at a fairly rapid pace. It has slowed down some now, but that's to be expected. I'm very content with my sleeve!

That gives me hope that my thyroid won't hinder my weight loss. I know everyone's body is different but at least it gives hope to see someone with the same issues and getting results, thank you for your post! :-)

I have not exercised for a lot of the 75lbs. I have severe RA which limits a lot of what I do. It has gotten better since the weight is coming off but still can't put a lot of pressure on my knees or arms. I follow the diet pretty strict. My dr said after about 2 weeks I could start walking and a month before a little more but by a month I felt fine and could have done more.

Since my thyroid being off some it stalled some but my RA dr also upped my prednisone which won't help the situation either. But 3 more lbs this week so I guess it's starting again.

Once again as things be in to become realistic, again the fear of not losing due to my hypothyroidism issues is a constant fear I try hard to ignore, but it ever so suddenly rises in my mind like its 6am and here I am wide awake well I'm a work so lol, but here I am paranoid that my thyroids will hinder my progression of losing weight. I'm trying to stay positive it would truly help to here from others with hypothyroidism who had WLS...anyone out there you're input, support and advice is much needed at this time.

I have been hypothyroid for many years, had the surgery 10/31/12 and lost 107 lbs. Last March I became hyperthyroid for some reason for a few months, then dropped and became very hypo again. The endocrinologist says she has no idea why it happened. I think it really contributed to Hair loss, but not too much to weight loss. She put me on tirosint, a thyroid replacement medication that is more expensive but believed to be better absorbed in our small stomachs. My levels have been steady since. The thought is that once one has thyroid problems they are more likely to have more thyroid problems down the road. We just have to stay vigilant.

Hi there, I had bypass surgery on May 7th, 2014. Went to my women visit and bloodwork showed I also have hyperthyroidism. I have never had a thyroid problem & my doc also said it's not related. I have not gone to endocrinologist yet, cause I just found out today. Can you tell me what happened to you after this post? Thank you!

I had surgery july 2 2013. I have lost 75 pounds. My endocrinologist ordered regular blood work and discovered I had a hyperthyroid. She just kept retesting me every 6 weeks and it went normal and then 6 weeks later it was off again. Now it has returned to normal but the weight loss has slowed (stalled) for a few months. My endocrinologist said it was not uncommon for WLS patients to have fluctuations in thyroid until weight loss slows. The hyperthyroid didn't speed up my weight loss though!

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
