Turler, Nice to hear from you. My name is Mollie by the way. I put that VOLEMT in there, because I am an EMT and it was short for a user name. Plus didnt want to list my name at first since wasnt familiar with the site. So you are more than welcome to call me by my name if you want. Doesn't matter. I have Medical Mutual Super Med Plus, and I guess that is a requirement of one thing I have to do. I hope it goes FAST!!! I have been looking on and off into it for about a year, but never got past seeing how it was done. I continued to think just dieting would work, but it would for about a week then gained all back. So seriously looking into it now. What kind of ins do you have? Anything you can tell me you learned either from this site or others? It is sooooo nice to have someone close to my area going thru it also. Support helps:)

Hi Mollie, I'm Carol. I didn't use my name for the same reason. I am a nurse so we have a few things in common.

I also have MedMutual. They required the 6 month diet and at least 2 co-morbidities ie, HTN, Diabetes, sleep Apnea, etc. Plus the BMI requirement, psych eval, exercise physiologist, nutritionist, and I think that's it. All of my stuff was done at the Bariatric offices, not through my PCP. At first I was discouraged, 6 months seemed so long, but it really did go fast. I really didn't lose any weight. I found it quite frustrating. I felt like it was a catch-22; if you lose weight, than you don't need the surgery, but if you could lose weight in the first place you wouldn't even be there!! UGH! Ya know?

I am new to this site. I lurked for a few days, read a whole bunch of threads and am really just now starting to post. I have met a really nice girl nearby and can't wait to meet more! I think it's important to the journey, especially with others that really do understand.

Nice to meet you Carol. I'm not a nurse, but also a Medical Asst. I work at a hospital in Port Clinton as a ER Ward Clerk. Just got moved to FT, which is great. I have worked 5 years as a registration clerk on 3rd shift PT. I will truely miss it and mostly people I work with. But needed a change and wanted FT. I am single, no children. My weight plays a big part in me meeting people. I feel like they do nothing, but stare and that bothers me. Was in a long relationship for 12yrs that ended very hurtful in 2001. Plus had a few other things in life hit me hard, so my self esteem is not very good. I am working on that myself. Each day gets better. I just want to overall feel better for right reasons, but also let it help me meet someone to make me feel inside complete. Someone who appreciates me for ME!!! Not what I look like, what I have, what I drive, where I live, etc. Sad that others judge us just because of how we look mainly. Anyways, sorry rambling on......Sounds like I have alot to go thru yet thanks to Med Mut...oh boy...but I am ready for whatever....I think it is great there are Forums like this, so we can meet others close to our area. Others don't understand unless they have been heavy what life is like for us. Not only physically, but mentally. So to have someone to talk to that is going thru this also makes me feel alot better inside. Glad to hear you are on your way with a good start...I am right behind you...haha......

Don't let all that info discourage you. I wish I had known just how involved it was before I started so I could be mentally prepared for it. I let it get me down for a little while, you know...the whole instant gratification thing. But somehow, I have survived, and my ship has finally come in. I will be banded on April 10th and I am so excited. Lots more appointments coming, but I am so thankful that they are so thorough.

As for finding love/relationships, the moment you stop looking it will happen. I'm sure you've heard that before, but it's true. Don't settle though, you must stay true to yourself, love yourself and care enough about yourself to realize you deserve the best. You are on the right path. This is a big step.

We will get through this---Newbies Unite! LOL

Hi Carol,

How things going? I get to attend the seminar on Monday at St Luke's. I am actually looking forward to it. What exactly are all the testing you had to go thru? When do you actually start the actual process of getting all this done? What kinds of things can you tell me about how your eating has changed or what you can and can't eat now? Just a few questions thought about lately wanted to ask you if you don't mind. I hope things are doing good for you.

Mollie:smile2:

Hi Mollie...good to hear from you!

Yeah, unfortunately, I'm not banded yet. Not 'til April. But I am going to stay positive and encouraged because I know that it will be here soon, and I need to be ready--mentally and physically!

I still have a few tests to go through...I need to get two lab draws, and EKG, EGD (just before surgery) and see the dietician again for Band specific diet instructions. I that's it now. Prior to that, I had to do the 6 months supervised diet with a log of my food intake, any exercise I did, psych eval, and a sleep study. It sounds like tons of work, but it's not too bad. They keep you busy though!

I just met with some of the ladies today in the Columbus area (some are banded, some not), and that was great. Good information. It was nice to get to ask questions face to face and elaborate if needed.

Good luck at the seminar Monday...I'm sure a lot of your questions will be answered! Keep me posted!

Carol

I have Med Mutual also, but realize that there are LOTS of different plans within their complany. I did my diet with the Bariatric center and that is what they said I had to do for the insurance. You could always call your insurance and ask them to give you the list of their requirements. That might give you some peace of mind. :)

Hope you had a good day at work!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
