5 yrs out - finally back on track

Recommended Posts

I had lapband surgery 5 yrs ago this past March. I initially lost 60 lbs within the first 5-6 months. I kept it all off, but struggled to lose anymore weight until a few months ago. I'm down a total of 76 lbs, with at about another 50 lbs more to lose until I'm satisfied.

Has anyone else experienced such a lag time with their weight loss progress? It's like I was in a few year 'funk'. I'm super happy that I had the surgery - no regrets at all.

Oh My yes, I lost most of my weight in 2007 - 2009 and then regain weight back to 250 by January 1, 2013. Came back to the Lap Band Board and had a fill and have lost about 35 pounds since January.

I have no regrets at all, Any weight gained has been totally on me cannot not blame the band.

Welcome Back.

Very similar story for me. I was banded in 2007 and lost about 140 pounds in a little over a year and half. That was great but i wasn't at goal. I gained about 50 or so back and like someone else said, it was my fault. I was not following the band rules and eating slider foods i knew were wrong. (read that ice cream-aholoic)

I went back this year and I am almost back to my lowest. It seems to be coming off slower this time. I also seem to only be losing around 10-15 pounds per fill. I can lose that usually within 2 weeks of the fill then i just plateau for some reason.

Trying to get a good exercise routine started but time commitments are playing havoc with my schedule and energy levels have hit rock bottom sometime. Thankfully my Dr's staff is awesome and helping work through the problems. At least the weight is coming back off!

wow, similar situation to say the least. Lost 40 lbs in the first year and have stayed the same weight (within 5 pounds) since then. I'm determined to get the next 35 pounds off before christmas to prove to myself I can do it. Any motivational techniques? food is the biggest player in weight loss but exercise matters also and time is always short. Just went for my first "run" in about 2 years. Hurts, sore, tired but ate a good dinner and am ready to get going again. Advice is welcome.

I'm in a similar situation. I'm 6+ years out, but was unfilled for over 3 years due to various other problems.

I lost close to 100 pounds in the first year and a half, started experiencing other issues after fills -- finally resulting in having my gallbladder removed in Summer 2012; and I'm only down about 20 pounds since.

This year, I'm determined to get back on track.

I find seeing myself naked in the mirror a good motivator. Mind you haven been banded yet. Can't wait looking forward in starting my journey.

How it it going now? I lost 60lbs and stayed there and have been fighting the band for the last year. Mainly psychological I think. Anyway, this week I think I cleared that hurdle and decided I was tired of been a slave to food. So. Let's see how it goes. First goal. Another 25 lbs

I have definitely experienced the same struggles. After an initial loss of about 60 pounds I found ways to pass more through and I gained some weight, but have now stabilized. I have been the same weight for about three years and I am now looking to also get back on track. Do you go to any supports groups, that is something I plan on looking into. Good luck!

I originally lost about 140ish my first year after I got it. After that, I got complacent and pretty much ate and drank whatever I wanted. I ended up staying at the same weight for about a year after that until I ended up getting in a little trouble over some dui's (don't drink and drive, trust me, not worth it) and wound up incarcerated in prison for almost six months. During that time, I was able to re-focus and am back down another 30 pounds. It was pretty hard in the joint, given the fact that we had to hurry up and eat during chow (got stuck twice), but I was able to maintain by cutting out carbs again as well as starting to work out. Now that I'm back out, I'm finding that I have a newfound respect for my band and all the great feelings that its successful use can bring. That awesome feeling I got when I went clothes shopping for smaller sizes again is all the motivation I need now.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
