December Delights 2009

Hi all -

Just checking in. So, I'm 3 days post-op now. Still having some pain with gas pressure and a bit around the incisions. The gas pain is weird and my stomach is VERY gurgly. It's like it's own personality right now. Talking all the time! The worst pain is around the middle of my chest and some in the shoulders.

Overall, there was much less pain so far than I thought I would have, but still enough to keep me on pain meds.

Total I start full liquids and am going to try some watery oatmeal this morning. See how it goes. Then a Protein Shake at lunch I think.

Anyway, glad to hear so many folks are banded and doing well!!

Congrats to all who were banded yesterday. We've heard from a few of you but want more of the details as soon as you're feeling up to it. Let those of us that are "yet to be banded" how it went. Hugs to all....

Hello everyone! I was banded on the 3rd here in Monterrey Mexico. It has been a mostly pleasant experience. the surgery went well. I had a tough time coming out of anasthesia...but I usually do. Out of the three of us here, I ended up with a tight band. I guess my stomach was bigger at the band site or something. Apparently I won't need an actual fill for 10-12 weeks. I have had a lot of referred pain, and it usually is triggered by having something. I have had to be extrememly careful with how much I consume. I get full really quickly...which I think is strange because I am only having thin fluids. Everyone else id doing fine with fluids though. haha.

I go home today, so I'll check back in in a week or so. Happy banding to all of you!!

~Mya

Just got off the phone with the on-call nurse. She said that my runny nose and feeling like I am coming down with a cold are normal for some patients. She said to be worried about the people who have had the surgery and then lay in bed for days and days... I've been up walking since the beginning, so she said that I am doing what I am supposed to. No fever either. She said that it hurts to cough because I haven't been taking my pain meds. I've been trying to go without them, and that's why it's been hard to breathe deeply.

I was also having mild charlie horses on both legs when first walking around. She said that is also a sign of being dehydrated. She was not concerned about what I shared with her. Thank goodness!!! I am going to take some pain meds and will check in later. Thanks!

Well I am doing ok... I would be a lot better if I had not have gone to a movie with with my family... I also walked around Walmart longer then I should have. DId not use any pain meds until I did all of this... So instead of popcorn I had a bowl of cream of brocoli Soup from subway. I can only eat a bit at a time so had about 1/2 of the small bowl.. 3.5 hrs later i had 1/2 of a small iced capachino... Came home and my hubby made me a chocolate shake with a banana... It is yummmy... So secret to this post is do not over due on the 4 day out of surgery... I learned my lesson.. Just wanted to spend some time with my family...

I was banded Friday, 12/4 and I'm doing good. It took me a bit to find a comfortable position to sleep the first night, but found one thankfully. Two pillows under my head and one under my knees. And thank goodness for Vicodin! I had a little left shoulder pain on Saturday, but mostly just soreness on my tummy. Today has been a bit of a challenge, as I've had the gas pains in my chest. Feels like I have to burp. My hubby went out and got me gas pills, which help a little. I've been overdoing it a little too (cleaning, decorating), cuz I feel pretty good. It catches up to you for sure. I've been taking long naps, and watching lots of TV. As for eating, it's Soups and Protein Drinks. I bought the Isopure fruit punch, but I don't like it at all. Sticking to EAS with 17gms of Protein, yum! The surgery was a breeze, and the incisions are so small! I too had a hiatal hernia repair, which I didn't know I had. I'm staying home tomorrow, but my plan is to go back to work Tuesday....we'll see. Now my journey really begins!

Forgot one thing.......A few coworkers who have been banded told me that I wouldn't be hungry or even care about eating right after the surgery. WRONG! Seriously, as soon as I got home I felt like eating Mcdonalds. Didn't of course, but I still get hungry. Hopefully when I get to solids, I won't feel this way. I'm not digging the liquid diet at all.

Hello all my fellow bandsters! I was banded on Dec. 2 by Dr. Ortiz in Tijuana. Everything went very well and the only real problem was the bloated feeling for a couple of days. We have taken the first step on our journey and now have the tool to accomplish our goals. I have lost 16 pounds in the last 3 weeks and I already notice a difference in how my clothes fit. I highly recommend the sugar free Jello with non flavored Protein Powder mixed in the cold Water portion for a great snack. I also like the sugar free hot chocolate. I am tempted to try a little "real food" because that is what my body after 59 years tells me I need but I just fight the urge and project my mind forward to the days when my friends are all telling me how great I look. One day at a time and once we are through this phase and eating smaller portions of that real food it will all be worth it. Being a Mexican bandit I really appreciate all the support we give each other as this is all I have with my Dr. being 1500 miles away. I am planning on getting my fill in Tijuana around Jan. 15. Anyone want to meet up? Good luck to all those whose surgery is coming up. It is definitely worth it!

Hello all, I leave for my surgery in an hour. I am waiting on my ride to the hostpital. Last night was a very rough night for sleep because it could not find me. I am so many emotions, excited, anxious, and nervous. Surgery is scheduled for 7:30 am. Pray for me and updates when I return.

I'm feeling the same as most of you. Sounds like all of these issues are normal. I had some Yogurt this morning and it went down fine. Also had some mashed potatos last night with no trouble. Very small bites and very small portions. I don't feel full but I don't want to over do it either. I wonder what it feels like to be full and if you will know before it's too late? I don't want to have trouble with PB'ing!

Stop me if I've shared this one with you, but on Saturday morning (surgery was Friday at noon), I got out of bed determined not to lay there all day. I didn't feel all that great, but I didn't feel all that bad either (not yet anyway). I thought it would be a good day to take out Christmas decorations and start sprucing-up the place for the holidays (very ambitious). So... my husband and eight-year-old son took-off to a get a tree while I stayed home to rest and go throught the bins looking for tree lights, etc. It occurred to me that I needed to get some walking-in, so I went out to the garage where my rarely used treadmill is, and turned it on. My husband came back in for something (gloves?)... and asked me what I was planning on doing. I said, "Honey, it's okay, remember the doctor said that walking would help with the gas pain?" He thought it was a bad idea. I kept talking, convincing him that it was good thing and eventually he just shook his head and told me to walk reeeeally slow and to get off of it if I didn't feel good cause he wouldn't be home to help me. I agreed. About one minute after I had gotten on the thing (and he had driven away), I had to jump off of it and run to the kitchen sink. I got sick. And getting sick with nothing in your stomach isn't a fun experience. I ended-up having to lay down for much of the afternoon and our eight-year-old had a field day with the Christmas decorations. I'm still cleaning-up the mess. So... I haven't been on the treadmill since (it's not time yet). And of course, when he got home I had to tell him that "he was right.... yadda yadda." If there's a moral to this story, I guess it's this: Sometimes being overly enthusiastic isn't a good thing. And sometimes I don't know everything.

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
