Just in case you skipped ahead on this thread...I'm throwing this question out for all of us to learn...

What are you doing to prepare for you surgery and the after part when you get home?

I'm keeping a binder with all of the great information (recipes, etc.) that I've happened across on this board. I have a 'clear liquids' grocery list of things to buy (some of which, I've purchased), and a 'pureed' list of things to buy - I'll wait to get those items. I've tried a few/handful of different Protein Shakes - dry and premade. I've found that I don't like most; they taste like infant formulas smell. But I have stocked my frig with a few that I liked a lot - Special K (milk chocolate), Boost (chocolate) and Isopure (punch). My appt. with my surgeon is on Thursday, so if he requires that I use a specific (bariatric) variety, I guess I'll find out then.

I've been reading a lot of posts and blogs - thebanded girl's, yosemites, etc.. Yosemite has a youtube link to a lb surgery and the names/critiques of two lb books on her blogsite. Good stuff.

All in all, I still have a bunch of things to BUY (sippy cups, liquid tylenol, more gas-x strips, toddler silverware); and PACK (a 'surgery day' bag with chapstick, fuzzy socks, comfy sweats, headband/barrette, gas-x strips, small pillow, reading glasses/book); and READ (the LB book recommended by Illumination Lady a couple pages back and another one called "Eating Well After Weight Loss Surgery", also mentioned on the board). I also should take my measurements and 'before' photos. Lots to do - it's a good thing I still have some time!

What are the sippy cups for, exactly? I get the small plates, but I'm a little confused about the sippers. What I've done to start preparing myself is that I have forced myself to have a Protein Shake for my Breakfast every morning. This is what I am going to have to do after surgery, so I figure I might as well get used to it now. I'm glad I'm doing it, because these shakes take some serious getting used to. The first day it took me three hours to choke them down. I have Walden Farms chocolate Syrup, but honestly it makes it taste worse. Anyone have some flavoring ideas? The other thing I'm working on is not drinking with my meals, and not for an hour afterwards. That's tough. Next on my list is learning tiny bites of food. And to buy Gas-X strips because I've seen enough posts to know I don't want to go without them. It's great to see what others are doing--I especially like creating a list of foods I'll be able to have for each stage-It'll keep me from living on Crystal Light and applesauce!

I'm happy to officially say that I belong here! I got my surgery date today and it will be December 17. Funny thing is that this is the exact date that my mom got lapband surgery 2 years ago. I'm thinking that must be good luck!

I haven't done a whole lot to prepare for surgery yet. I did start exercising again a couple months ago (doing Jazzercise) and have been good about doing that at least twice a week. Its not much, but its a start!

Today, when I went to costco, I bought 'Protein Shots' in fruit punch and orange flavors. They are 3 oz each and have 25 grams of Protein and only 100 calories. I tried the fruit punch one and thought it was pretty good... like liquid Jello. I looked at the Protein Shakes, but was paralyzed trying to decide which one to try.

I obviously haven't been back to the board for a while...last time I checked there hadn't been a thread started yet for December, and now this one has nine pages already!

After THREE-PLUS YEARS of working up to it, my surgery date is set for December 8. Wahoo!!!!

I start a low-carb, low-fat, low-calorie, two-week pre-op diet on November 24, but other than that I don't have any requirements for weight loss prior to surgery.

I'm incredibly nervous and incredibly excited. More than anything I'm looking forward to never "dieting" again. Good luck to all of us!!

I found a good tasting Vitamin  Bariatric Fusion Orange Cream!! I didn't like the berry flavor, but the orange cream I could handle on a daily basis.

Today I was approved by the psychologist for surgery. The bariatric coordinator said for me to start preparing, she shooting to get me on the schedule for surgery on Dec 15th. I have one last test I need to take, but our hospital is getting new equipment and will not schedule any tests until after Dec 1st. So, my date will be pending that test comes out ok, but looks like I will start my liquid diet before I take the test! They seem very positive everything will work out ok and Dec 15th will be my big day:thumbup:

Today I picked up liquid Tylenol, a single serve blender and some new pj's to come home from the hospital in. Later this week I will be ordering my Vitamins and shakes online. Thank you to everyone for all the helpful information!!

I know the feeling. I started the process about 3 years ago and I finally decided to go through with it this time. I am so nervous and excited.

I also started this process 3 yrs ago, however, my insurance at the time denied me. Although, I think by having that long gap, I am more than ready this time around! I can't wait!!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
